What are weighted average marks?

Weighted average marks demonstrate your academic performance over a specified period. Each mark is weighted according to the unit’s credit point value and, in some cases, the level of study. Not all completed units of study are included in these calculations, and the University uses different types of average marks for different purposes.

Average marks may be used to determine your eligibility for opportunities such as an honours program, prizes and scholarships, or for assessing your progression and academic performance.

What are the different types?

Type Explanation
WAM

Weighted Average Mark is the general term for the average of your marks over a specified period, weighted according to credit point value.

If you’re applying for an opportunity with a minimum WAM requirement (e.g. honours, scholarships, overseas study), you’ll need to check the application criteria and any relevant course resolutions, as the calculation approach can vary.

AAM Annual Average Mark is the average mark calculated for a single year.
SAM Semester Average Mark is the average mark calculated for a single semester.
CSAM

Cross-Semester Average Mark is the average mark you’ve achieved in the CSAM period.

The CSAM period is the block of time it takes you to complete at least 48 credit points. This means it could include more than 48 credit points. For example, if you study 18 credit points each semester, your CSAM period will run over three semesters and include 54 credit points of units.

Once a unit has been counted in a CSAM period, it won’t be counted in the next CSAM period.

CWAM

Converted WAM only applies to students who completed units of study in Semester 1 2020.

CWAM is calculated in the same way as your WAM across your whole degree, but excluding marks from units undertaken in Semester 1 2020, at the time when the COVID-19 pandemic had the greatest impact.

Your CWAM and WAM will appear on your final academic transcript when you are awarded and will be considered when applying for our postgraduate studies and honours programs. However, if you transfer to a different course, CWAM will no longer apply to you, even if units you completed in Semester 1 2020 are credited to your new course.

When applying for programs at other institutions, the higher CWAM/WAM mark should be accepted.

Other

Some faculties and schools use specific average mark calculations. Check your course resolutions to see if these calculations apply to you.

For example, the Engineering Integrated Honours Weighted Average Mark (EIHWAM) applies a weighting to units depending on their level of study.

What units are included in WAM?

Units included in WAM

Generally, all units you completed as part of your course at the University where you received a numerical mark (that is, a mark out of 100) are counted.

This includes:

  • units you received specific credit for that have a mark
  • OLE units taken before Semester 1, 2025, if you received a mark. Find out more.
  • any units you didn’t pass - you'll need to include both marks for the failed attempts and the mark if you re-take the unit and pass.

If you’re applying for an opportunity such as honours, check the application requirements and the applicable course resolutions for additional information about which units to include.

Units not included in WAM

Don’t include units:

  • credited from another institution
  • completed on exchange or study abroad
  • where you received a grade, but no mark. This includes grades of:
    • Satisfied Requirements (SR)
    • Failed Requirements (FR)
    • Cancelled (CN)
    • Discontinued not to count as failure (DC)
    • Discontinue – Fail (DF)
    • Incomplete (IC)
    • Result Incomplete (RI)
    • Unit of Study Continuing (UC)
    • Incomplete (J2)
    • Withdrawn (WD)
    • Not Examinable (NE)
