Welcome and orientation

Your introduction to university life
Don't miss the events, workshops and activities that we've planned to help you adjust to life as a university student.

Our University of Sydney Welcome Program takes place in the weeks leading up to the start of semester. Welcome activities include orientation events for our new students to help you get started at University, workshops to support our continuing students as they transition into the next year of their studies, information sessions, and fun social events for all students.

The Welcome Program includes events and sessions run by faculties, student support services, the University of Sydney Union (USU), clubs and societies and more.

In Semester 1 2023, our Welcome activities will take place between 6 February and 24 February, with the majority of events taking place the week before semester begins.

You'll find out:

  • information about your course, teachers and classes
  • the basics of university study, including critical thinking and research skills
  • how and where to access student services and support
  • information about career planning, overseas study opportunities and other ways to make the most of your time at university
  • making new friends and expanding your networks
  • help with living independently.

Make sure you regularly check your University email address, as you'll receive invitations and updates about our Welcome Program.

Coming to Welcome?

The University is dedicated to ensuring that all students have equal access to all the experiences that student life has to offer. And access to our Welcome Program is no exception.

If you have any accessibility requirements, or if you require further information or assistance to participate and engage in the full program of activities, please don’t hesitate to contact the event organisers listed in the Welcome Planner, or the University.

Plan your day

Campus Maps, on the University website and the Sydney Uni app, will help you locate services and facilities that will assist you, including turn by turn navigation on campus that will avoid stairs and obstacles.

The Welcome Festival is an alcohol-free event. Anti-social behaviour is not tolerated and security personnel and event staff will be on hand to respond to any concerns.

Ongoing support

Don’t forget to register with the Inclusion and Disability Support team as part of getting started at uni. The team can assist you with adjustments and services that will help you succeed in your studies and make the most of student life. Each faculty or school also has at least one Faculty Disability Liaison Officer (FDLO) who can provide advice specific to your faculty.
