Whether you're sticking around Sydney or coming back between trips, there are heaps of ways to make the most of the mid-year break without spending big. From spotting whales off the coast to digging through vintage markets or celebrating First Nations culture during NAIDOC Week, this is your sign to step outside, slow down, and explore what the city has to offer – all without breaking the bank.
Celebrate First Nations history and culture for NAIDOC Week
This year’s NAIDOC Week theme is The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy, celebrated from 6–13 July 2025.
🖼️ The National Indigenous Art Fair returns to the Overseas Passenger Terminal at The Rocks on 5–6 July, showcasing work by First Nations artists, designers and makers. Entry is $3 (or free for children under 12).
🎉 NAIDOC in the City happens on Wednesday 9 July in Hyde Park, with food, live music, dance, and cultural workshops.
Watch whales by the sea
From May to August, humpback whales migrate along the NSW coast—and Sydney offers some of the best vantage points.
Top spots include:
Barrenjoey Lighthouse at Palm Beach
Cape Solander in Kamay Botany Bay National Park
The Coast Track in the Royal National Park
Bring a jacket, a mate, and maybe some binoculars.
Take a stroll through the Royal Botanic Garden
Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden is a peaceful escape right next to the CBD, full of native plants, sculptures, and stunning views over the harbour.
It’s open daily and completely free to enter. Don't forget to bring a warm jumper to avoid the winter freeze!
