Navigating the first three weeks of university can feel overwhelming, but with a few key steps, you can stay ahead of your studies and have fun along the way.

It's normal to feel a mix of excitement and anxiety in the first few weeks of uni. From finding your way around campus to keeping up with your coursework and assignments, there's a lot to juggle. But don’t worry – with planning and the right mindset, you can set yourself up for a smooth and successful semester. Here’s how to make the most of your first three weeks.

1. Get organised early

Be ready to tackle those early assessment tasks by checking your unit outlines, noting down key dates, and setting up a simple system to track your deadlines – whether that's a planner, an app, or a colour-coded spreadsheet. Download our student wall calendar (PDF, 74.9KB) and explore Canvas, our e-learning platform.

2. Ensure your student admin is in order

Make sure you’ve sorted out things like your timetable, Opal card, student concession, and Wi-Fi login (UniSydney is your go-to). For any admin help you might need, visit Student Support @ Campus Connect hubs across the Camperdown/Darlington campus to help you wrap your head around everything from enrolment to understanding your timetable, fees, and scholarships.

3. Go to your classes (seriously)

We know it's tough to get up for a 9 am lecture or tutorial, but showing up means you're less likely to fall behind later in the semester. Plus, lecturers and tutors drop useful hints about assessments during class time, so it's worth paying attention! If you can’t make it to your lectures in person, check if your classes are recorded so that you can catch up later.

4. Make friends (or at least friendly acquaintances)

We can't promise that you'll meet your lifelong best friend in Week 1, but having people to study with and keep you accountable makes uni way more enjoyable. Introduce yourself in tutorials, join a club or society, and don’t be afraid to ask, “Hey, do you want to grab a coffee after class?”

5. Find your go-to campus spots

Where’s the best coffee? Where’s the quietest study spot? Where’s that one class on the other side of campus? Spend time exploring campus in your first weeks to familiarise yourself with all the best campus haunts (and to avoid running super late to class). Campus Maps, which you can access online, on the Student Portal or in the Sydney Uni app, is a lifesaver for navigating our large campuses.

6. Get involved outside of class

Uni isn’t just about lectures and assignments. Whether it’s sports, volunteering, student media, or one of the 200+ clubs and societies, getting involved is a great way to meet people and make uni feel less like school and more like an experience.

7. Take care of yourself

Uni can be a lot, so pace yourself. Stay on top of sleep, eat nutritious and nourishing food (instant noodles should be a sometimes food) and make use of our wellbeing services if you need support. Balance is key – work hard, but make time for fun too.

Ready to go?

The first few weeks can set the tone for your semester, so by getting on top of things early, you give yourself the best chance at smoothly sailing through your studies.

Stay curious, be open to new experiences, and remember – everyone else is figuring it out too! You’ve got this.
