When Sinthia boarded a flight to Australia, she became the first person in her family to study overseas and pursue a PhD.
She left behind her family, friends, career and the life she had built in Bangladesh. What she carried with her was something less tangible: years of encouragement from parents, teachers and mentors who had supported a path that not everyone understood.
Today, Sinthia is based at the Narrabri's Plant Breeding Institute, located 521 kilometres northwest of Sydney, researching how rising temperatures affect wheat production. Using field experiments, remote sensing and emerging technologies, she hopes to contribute to the development of crop varieties that can better withstand a changing climate.
But her journey into agricultural research began thousands of kilometres away in Bangladesh.

LinkChoosing a path of her own
Growing up, Sinthia often encountered a familiar expectation: the most successful careers were seen as medicine or engineering, with agriculture rarely appearing on that list.
Yet agriculture was the subject that made the most sense to her. Born and raised in Bangladesh, she had seen firsthand the central role farming plays in people's lives and livelihoods. She also saw how vulnerable farming communities could be to changing weather conditions and extreme heat.
While others questioned her decision to pursue agriculture, Sinthia trusted her instincts, a decision that led her to Bangladesh Agricultural University, where she completed both her undergraduate and master's degrees. Her academic success earned her the Dean's Merit Award and later the University Gold Medal before she joined the university's Department of Agronomy as a faculty member.
For Sinthia, choosing agriculture was never simply about choosing a career. It was about contributing to a problem she had seen growing around her.
"Heat stress is becoming one of the greatest threats to wheat production," she says. "I want to address this real-world challenge by combining agronomy with modern technologies."
From lecturer to student
Before arriving in Australia, Sinthia was already building a successful academic career.
As a lecturer in agronomy (the science behind growing field crops and managing soil), she taught undergraduate students while continuing her own research. Watching students gain confidence and discover their passion for agriculture became one of the most rewarding parts of her work.
Yet despite those achievements, she felt her learning journey was still far from finished.
Pursuing a PhD offered an opportunity to deepen her expertise, work with advanced technologies and gain international experience that she hoped would one day benefit both her students and the agricultural sector in Bangladesh.
Making that next step, however, required an enormous leap of faith.
"Deciding to move to Australia was one of the biggest and most difficult decisions I’ve ever made," she says. "It meant leaving behind my family, friends, country and everything that had always felt like home."

LinkLearning to live with distance
If moving overseas was challenging, moving to regional Australia brought its own adjustments.
Coming from a culture centred on family and community, living alone in Narrabri initially felt isolating. The quietness of a regional town was a stark contrast to the life she had known in Bangladesh.
"There are still days when I miss my family deeply, especially during festivals, birthdays and simple family dinners that I now experience only through video calls," she says.
However, surrounded by wheat fields and agricultural research, Sinthia found herself immersed in the kind of work she had always hoped to pursue. Instead of remaining confined to a laboratory, she could work directly in the field, collecting data, observing crops and seeing the real-world application of her research.
The challenges of living independently gradually became lessons in resilience.
"Narrabri has become much more than a place where I conduct experiments," she says. "It is where I am building resilience, independence, and confidence. It is where I am growing not only as a scientist, but also as a person."
