ARCH4010: Architecture Dissertation
2024 unit information
In Architecture Dissertation, students carry out a substantial individual research project alongside a small group of peers who are pursuing topics and approaches conversant with their own. Guided by an academic with broad expertise in each group's area of research, students advance their project and present it for discussion and critique at key stages of development, and they finally communicate their findings in a clearly articulated and appropriately illustrated dissertation that is the culmination of the undergraduate Honours component of their degree. The dissertation may take the form of a traditional architectural humanities thesis; a scientific report; or a studio design supported by a textual exposition that theorises and contextualises the project.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:
- LO1. Employ sound ethical judgement in their own research projects, based on solid comprehension of the discipline of architecture, and the ways that its knowledge and practices are shared, evaluated and adopted.
- LO2. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of important themes and theoretical positions in contemporary architectural discourse, and be able to evaluate and challenge them using sophisticated skills and fluency in written, verbal and graphic expression
- LO3. Exercise well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills to identify and analyse complex problems in the built environment, and to propose innovative solutions to them.
- LO4. Appraise and constructively critique the research work of their peers, based on sound knowledge of the discipline of architecture, and accommodating differing cultural values and practices.
- LO5. Conceive and carry out an architectural research project with methodological rigour, and transmit the findings in a clearly articulated and appropriately illustrated honours dissertation.
