ARCH4010: Architecture Dissertation

Semester 2, 2025 [Normal day] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

In Architecture Dissertation, students carry out a substantial individual research project alongside a small group of peers who are pursuing topics and approaches conversant with their own. Guided by an academic with broad expertise in each group's area of research, students advance their project and present it for discussion and critique at key stages of development, and they finally communicate their findings in a clearly articulated and appropriately illustrated dissertation that is the culmination of the undergraduate Honours component of their degree. The dissertation may take the form of a traditional architectural humanities thesis; a scientific report; or a studio design supported by a textual exposition that theorises and contextualises the project.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Weekly Students will have weekly tutorials with a group and individual component. Weekly tutorials will involve the following activities: presentation, discussion and feedback relating to students' self-directed research dissertations, research and writing development activities. Attendance and class requirements

Students are expected to attend a minimum of 90% of timetabled activities for each unit of study, unless granted exemption by the Head of School and Dean, Associate Dean Education or relevant Unit Coordinator. The Head of School and Dean, Associate Dean Education or relevant Unit Coordinator may determine that a student fails a unit of study because of inadequate attendance. Alternatively, at their discretion, they may set additional assessment items when attendance is lower than 90%.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 12 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 240-300 hours of student effort in total.

Learning outcomes are what students know, understand and are able to do on completion of a unit of study. They are aligned with the University's graduate qualities and are assessed as part of the curriculum.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of important themes and theoretical positions in contemporary architectural discourse, and be able to evaluate and challenge them using sophisticated skills and fluency in written, verbal and graphic expression
  • LO2. Exercise well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills to identify and analyse complex problems in the built environment, and to propose innovative solutions to them.
  • LO3. Demonstrate skills in constructively critiquing others and responding to critique by others, respecting disciplinary conventions and differing cultural values and practices.
  • LO4. Conceive and carry out an architectural research project with methodological rigour, and transmit the findings in a clearly articulated and appropriately illustrated honours dissertation.
