This unit of study builds on CLNP5006 and focuses on how multimodal monitoring can be used in a broad range of cranial, spinal and peripheral nerve procedures to minimise the likelihood of neurological trauma. Students will acquire the theoretical knowlede and practical skills to perform the various modalities of intraoperatrive neurophysiological monitoring and understand the structures at risk during a particular surgery.

Assessment summary

  • Graded quizzes: The quizzes are designed to help students gauge their progress in meeting the learning outcomes. There is one attempt only for each quiz. There will be 6 graded quizzes total made up of 10 multiple choice questions. The quizzes are open for a set period. Please note that quizzes cannot be completed after the close date.
  • Case discussions: The clinical case discussions are designed to help students understand and apply the concepts that underpin the fundamentals of neurophysiology. Students will be presented with a case and asked to respond to the questions posed. There are 6 discussions throughout the semester at the end of every module. Students are required to post a response to every discussion board and respond, comment on, raise questions, provide answers or critique at least one other students’ post. Once submitted, students will have access to other students’ answers and will be required to prepare a comment to another students’ answer.
  • Essays: The essays are designed to help students synthesise and apply knowledge gained. Answers to the short answer questions must be properly referenced before submission.
  • Final online exam: The final exam has one attempt only and a time limit. The exam date is to be confirmed but will be held in the exam period. It comprises 50 multiple choice questions. The multiple choice questions require students to select the single most correct response from four or five options. Students must pass this assessment in order to achieve a minimum passing grade for this unit.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Please note, for this unit of study (CLNP5007) the late submission penalty will be 5% of the maximum awardable mark for each calendar day after the due date for 5 calendar days only. This is to ensure that timely feedback is provided to students. If the assessment is submitted more than 5 calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: The compulsory face-to-face teaching day for Semester 2, 2020 has been withdrawn due to COVID-19 related reasons. However, students will be invited to attend a replacement face-to-face teaching day held at a later time (probably in 2021) but attendance is optional.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.
