CMPN3635: Writing Music for the Moving Image

Semester 1, 2023 [Normal day] - Sydney

The unit provides a practical introduction into the creation of, and aesthetics for music and moving image. Topics for discussion will include, but are not be limited to: relationships between image and sound, diegetic and non-diegetic sound, thematic development, partnerships between composers, directors and other such collaborations within the creative sector, sound design, music for games and animation, and non-commercial applications of music for image (audiovisual art, cymatics etc). The unit seeks to enable students the ability to develop a skillset within their own studio spaces for the creation and dissemination of their projects; both at a sector ready, as well as a technically proficient level. Importantly, students will be presented with a variety of possible projects and collaborations with industry partners across differing creative sectors.

Assessment summary

  • Critical review: Students will review and analyse the sonic component (either sound design or music) from a selected work for moving image. This will consider the contextual, aesthetic, technical and interactive/responsive approach of the sonic content chosen for examination. The assessment can be presented in a non-Traditional format (i.e. excerpts of a film with you speaking over the top etc).
  • Portfolio: Students will complete a substantive sound production for moving image, the duration of which will vary depending on the type and scope of project undertaken (this will be negotiated with the lecturer, but as an estimate the sonic content should be equivalent to approximately 5- 7 minutes’ duration). Project topics will be varied (as outlined above) including music or sound design for commercial/non-commercial moving image, sound for animation, sound design or sonification for more abstracted types of moving image.

A mark of 95 or above indicates extraordinary technical virtuosity and musical artistry.

75 - 84

Excellent technical, musical and stylistic achievement. Consistently coherent and expressive performance. Some personal interpretation of the work suggesting soloist potential. 

Credit

65 - 74

Confident technique with evidence of solid musicality and some stylistic achievement. Occasional lapses indicative of unresolved technical, artistic and/or stylistic issues. Projects potential for further development.

Pass

50 - 64

Satisfactory level of preparation and musical engagement. Some inconsistencies in musicianship, style and/or technique. Musical imagination and overall performance sense developing though some insecurity in this area.

Fail

0 - 49

Unsatisfactory technical achievement and/or unsatisfactory level of musical and artistic engagement. Limitations may be of such a scale and consistency as to call into question the student’s future direction in the programme.

Work may fail for any or all of the following reasons: Unacceptable paraphrasing; irrelevance of content; poor spelling; poor presentation; grammar or structure so sloppy it cannot be understood; failure to demonstrate understanding of content; insufficient or overlong word length.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

You may only use artificial intelligence and writing assistance tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator, and if you do use them, you must also acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section.

Studiosity is permitted for postgraduate units unless otherwise indicated by the unit coordinator. The use of this service must be acknowledged in your submission.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

  • Attendance: Students are expected to attend a minimum of 90% of timetabled activities for a unit of study, unless granted exemption by the Dean, Head of School or professor most concerned. The Dean, Head of School or professor most concerned may determine that a student fails a unit of study because of inadequate attendance. Alternatively, at their discretion, they may set additional assessment items where attendance is lower than 90%.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:
