Semester 2, 2022 [Normal day] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

In this unit students will apply their audiological knowledge to assess hearing solutions and (re)habilitation services to meet the needs of those with hearing loss, across the lifespan. Through guided engagement with individuals affected by hearing difficulties students will identify clients’ communication needs, relevant intervention options and develop aural rehabilitation programs. This unit will promote an understanding of public hearing health and clinical pathways for people with hearing loss, from identification and appropriate referrals, to technological and communication options. Students will complete an interdisciplinary experience to understand the role of audiology in healthcare.

Assessment summary

- Students will be required to submit an individual written assessment (1500 words), based on 2 interviews with a volunteer who has a lived experience of hearing loss. These interviews will be conducted in pairs. 

- Students will also be required to record and submit individual reports in a 5-minute video format. This report will be based on an individual interview with a clinician working within an interdisciplinary context and will expand from their 2 first interviews and their written assessment.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Students must complete all tasks to pass this unit of study. Failure to complete all assessments will result in a Fail grade, regardless of the cumulative total of marks.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Assignments are due 11.59pm on the day outlined in Canvas. Submission after this time is deemed late. 5% is deducted from the mark for each day it is late. After 10 days the assignment is not marked. Academic integrity

You may only use artificial intelligence and writing assistance tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator, and if you do use them, you must also acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section.

Studiosity is permitted for postgraduate units unless otherwise indicated by the unit coordinator. The use of this service must be acknowledged in your submission.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: Students are recommended to attend all live classes. All lectures and tutorials will assist with the interviews and content of the assessments. The first class (Introduction) will provide important guidance about the format and expectations for this unit. 

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Identify the implications of a hearing loss, taking into consideration the cause, type and degree of hearing loss.
  • LO2. Describe in writing and orally the reported case history, hearing difficulties, and the hearing and communication needs of an individual with hearing loss.
  • LO3. Describe in writing a suitable intervention plan for an individual client including most suitable communication strategies and hearing technologies.
  • LO4. Use online technologies and communication strategies to interview a person with experience living with hearing loss, and a hearing healthcare professional.
  • LO5. Demonstrate an ability to accurately understand the impact of hearing loss across a lifetime for people with hearing loss and discuss ethical and evidence-based intervention options for this population.
  • LO6. Integrate the viewpoints from different professionals involved in the assessment and management of clients, formulate service and management plans accordingly, including appropriate referrals as needed.
