DENT5024: Implant Clinical Procedures 2

Semester 2, 2022 [Normal day] - Westmead, Sydney

This unit aims to provide students at the postgraduate level details of clinical decision-making and evidence-based information on implant clinical procedures. The student will be able to surgically place implants in various clinical presentations, perform the appropriate impression procedures and select the appropriate abutments and suprastructure materials. Minor bone augmentation procedures will be integrated into the surgical skill training to enhance implant outcome.

Assessment summary

Candidates must demonstrate a wide field of knowledge in implant dentistry derived from both didactic blocks and general reading of the literature.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

You may only use artificial intelligence and writing assistance tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator, and if you do use them, you must also acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section.

Studiosity is permitted for postgraduate units unless otherwise indicated by the unit coordinator. The use of this service must be acknowledged in your submission.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

  • Attendance: Attendance is a professional responsibility required of all students admitted to academic programs within the Sydney Dental School. All programs in the Sydney Dental School have a 90% attendance policy, for all compulsory components of Units of Study, as detailed in the Faculty of Dentistry Attendance Provisions 2015. This includes all clinical and practical sessions. The course requirements cannot be satisfied if more than 10% of any section of a course is missed for any reason.

  • Professionalism: Students in all Sydney Dental School programs are subject to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Professionalism Requirements 2019 and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Professionalism Provisions 2019. Professionalism is an essential component of developing competency to practice. It is important for students to demonstrate professional behaviour in all contexts and environments. In accordance with these local provisions: candidates who demonstrate serious or repeated unprofessional behaviour may be required to show cause as to why their enrolment should be continued. Failure to show cause may result in exclusion from the course.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO4. understand the use of zirconia for superstructure restorations and its limitations
  • LO5. confidently place implants in bone of various densities to achieve good primary stability
  • LO6. choose implants of various designs to adapt to specific clinical situations
  • LO7. place implants with immediate and early placement protocol
  • LO8. perform minor grafting procedures and the use of guided bone regeneration
  • LO9. recognise the reasons for superstructure distortion in the fabrication of an implant restoration
  • LO10. use strategies to minimise distortion and to achieve passive fit for the prosthesis
  • LO11. understand the necessity for passive fit of the restoration and possible complications
  • LO12. select various abutments for single and multi unit restorations
  • LO13. determine which abutment would be appropriate in certain clinical situations and fixture angulations.
  • LO14. demonstrate knowledge in the vital structures in the maxilla and mandible for dentoalveolar surgery
  • LO15. perform implant surgery safely to avoid anatomic complications
  • LO16. examine and make appropriate diagnoses of nerve injuries, especially of the inferior dental nerve
  • LO17. determine when external referral is necessary for nerve injuries
  • LO18. provide a selection of the restorative materials used for single teeth and short span implant constructions
  • LO19. recognise the use and appropriateness of cantilevers and tooth/implant connected restorations
