DENT6386: Restorative Dentistry 1

Semester 2, 2021 [Normal day] - Westmead, Sydney

This unit continues the advanced didactic training at the postgraduate level in advanced restorative dentistry, fixed and removable prosthodontics including implant dentistry. The didactic programme compliments the clinical training and activities with evidence-based information. Active participation in regular journal clubs, seminars and workshops which are held to critically evaluate the current literature and gain the theoretical background required. The first year focus is on aetiology and multidisciplinary diagnosis of dental disease as well as comprehensive treatment planning and sequencing with holistic patient centred management. Students may be required to attend classes at multiple locations.

  • Written Exam:  3 hour examination
     
  • Active seminar participation is expected and will be assessed by supervisors. At least one formal Seminar Presentation will include a literature review submission at the highest level to evaluate the student in review, understanding and critical appraisal as well as scientific writing skills.  Written submission to be handed in at least 1 week before presentation.  Submission to be submitted through turnitin.
    A slide presentation will summarise the submission and present the salient features of the topic.  The student is expected to lead a scientific discussion on the topic.

Late submission

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

  • Attendance: Attendance is a professional responsibility required of all students admitted to academic programs within the Sydney Dental School. All programs in the Sydney Dental School have a 90% attendance policy, for all compulsory components of Units of Study, as detailed in the Faculty of Dentistry Attendance Provisions 2015. This includes all clinical and practical sessions. The course requirements cannot be satisfied if more than 10% of any section of a course is missed for any reason.
  • Professionalism: Students in all Sydney Dental School programs are subject to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Professionalism Requirements 2019 and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Professionalism Provisions 2019. Professionalism is an essential component of developing competency to practice. It is important for students to demonstrate professional behaviour in all contexts and environments. In accordance with these local provisions: candidates who demonstrate serious or repeated unprofessional behaviour may be required to show cause as to why their enrolment should be continued. Failure to show cause may result in exclusion from the course.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. demonstrate detailed knowledge in oral biology of the evolutionary and embryological development of the oral and cranio-facial structures, stomatognathic system and the natural dentition; form and function of the stomatognathic system; mastication; oro-facial feedback and defence mechanisms; tissue responses in the oro-facial region; bone growth; orthognathics
  • LO2. demonstrate detailed knowledge, expected of a specialist in prosthodontics, in oral microbiology, oral medicine and oral pathology. This should include hard and soft oral tissues and not limited to cariology, oral mucosal diseases; salivary gland disorders; pathology of bone and synovium; age changes in the oral tissues; histological diagnostic criteria for hard and soft tissue diseases; radiological signs for differential diagnoses;
  • LO3. demonstrate detailed knowledge In periodontology of the pathogenesis, diagnosis and classification of periodontal diseases; non-surgical treatment of routine and periodontally-involved cases
  • LO4. demonstrate detailed knowledge of materials and methods used for direct and indirect restorations using conventional analogue and digital pathways
  • LO5. demonstrate detailed knowledge of the history and biology of osseointegration as well as the diagnosis and management of straightforward implant cases
  • LO6. demonstrate working knowledge of surgical and restorative implant componentry including their materials, surface characteristics and manipulation.
  • LO7. demonstrate an understanding of the interdisciplinary relationship with all dental specialties and relevant medical specialties.
