Semester 1, 2020 [Normal day] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

This unit will prepare students to be effective teachers of Stage 6 Business Studies. The unit will develop competencies and skills in lesson planning, programming and pedagogy in teaching Business Studies in Stage 6. An understanding of the NSW Board of Studies Years 11-12 Business Studies Syllabus will be emphasised and students will develop lesson plans, programs, teaching resources and a range of Business Studies teaching materials. Further emphasis will be placed on ways that Board of Studies HSC assessment requirements can be met including developing assessment tasks and programs. Use of ICT for both teaching and preparation will be a focus of this unit.

Assessment summary

  • Developing two assessment tasks: You are to develop two assessment tasks for Stage 6 Business Studies. One task should apply to the Preliminary Course and the other the HSC Course. In addition, you are to provide a 500 word justification of your tasks which considers the diverse ways that students learn, anticipates any classroom managment issues and details the ways you will provide feedback to students on this task. You should also provide a 500 word reflection on the ways this task help you to meet the  Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
  • Developing a program of work: You are to develop a program for one topic from the Stage 6 Business Studies. You should follow the proforma inThe NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) document Business Studies Stage 6 HSC Course Support Document. You must also include a 500 word reflection statement addressing the ways this task helps you meet the  National Professional Standards for Teachers, and outlining each person's contribution to the task.
  • e-Learning task: You are required in groups of four students to develop a blog/wiki/google/Edmodo site for teaching a case study of a business. You may choose either an Australian business with strong global links or an international business. You should also provide a 1000 word Group reflection outlining the contribution of each member of your Group and the ways this task helps you to meet the  National Professional Standards for Teachers.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a High distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a Distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Academic integrity

We use similarity detection software to detect potential instances of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breach. If such matches indicate evidence of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breaches, your teacher is required to report your work for further investigation.

You may only use artificial intelligence and writing assistance tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator, and if you do use them, you must also acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section.

Studiosity is permitted for postgraduate units unless otherwise indicated by the unit coordinator. The use of this service must be acknowledged in your submission.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: The Sydney School of Education and Social Work requires attendance of at least 90 percent of all seminars, workshops or lectures. Where a student is unable to attend at the required rate evidence of illness or misadventure may be required and the student may be required to undertake extra work. Students should discuss the circumstances of their absence(s) with the co-ordinator of the unit of study. Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. demonstrate a detailed understanding of the Stage 6 Business Studies syllabus content and requirements with particular emphasis on the HSC
  • LO2. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the ways students in Stage 6 Business Studies learn across a range of abilities and learning styles, including effective communication practices
  • LO3. demonstrate an ability to plan for effective learning in Stage 6 Business Studies through reference to current research and pedagogical practice including effective assessment strategies and be able to demonstrate researched based knowledge of the pedagogies for the business studies
  • LO4. develop an ongoing commitment to lifelong learning as a teacher of Stage 6 Business Studies underpinned by collegiality and including professional association membership.
