EDMT6642: The Transition to Teaching

2024 unit information

In this unit of study, students examine in depth a range of key policies and workplace issues that are directly relevant to their successful transition from pre-service teacher to fully-accredited professional. Students will explore case studies of first-year-out teachers and engage in seminars with early-career teachers and accomplished teacher mentors to more fully understand the complex contextual, personal and professional factors that contribute to a rewarding and sustainable teaching career. Students will reflect on the implications of policies, case studies and seminar themes for their professional goals, personal well-being and career pathways.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. 1. Critically analyse and demonstrate an understanding of a range of educational and professional policies and documents that are directly relevant to teachers' work. GTS 6.1.1, 7.2.1
  • LO2. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the regulatory systems for Australian teachers, including formal accreditation and ongoing professional learning requirements. GTS 6.2.1, 6.4.1, 7.2.1
  • LO3. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge and understanding of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (Graduate to Proficient). GTS 6.1.1
  • LO4. Critically analyse and reflect on the ways in which regulatory systems, workplace relations, workload requirements and other mandatory policies may impact on their professional goals, personal wellbeing and career pathways. GTS 7.1.1, 7.2.1, 7.4.1
  • LO5. Demonstrate critical engagement with and reflection on early-career and accomplished teachers' perspectives on the roles, dimensions and factors influencing the quality of the early-career experience, including working with parents, communities and other stakeholders. GTS 6.2.1, 6.4.1, 7.4.1
