2026 unit information

This unit of study focuses on teaching and learning additional languages in primary schools, with a focus on developing pedagogical knowledge and creativity, as well as specialisation in specific languages. The unit will examine the rationale for starting formal language learning early in a school setting, as well as related topics such as implementing a language program, linking to first language literacy, and using appropriate teaching techniques for lesson planning, unit programming, and material design and evaluation. Students will investigate various models of implementation in NSW primary schools and participate in micro-teaching sessions with their peers.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. demonstrate knowledge of current languages education policies, primary school languages program implementation, the value of languages in the broader curriculum and the relationship between languages, literacy and numeracy.
  • LO2. demonstrate an awareness of the current NESA languages syllabuses, Stages 1-3, along with lesson planning skills.
  • LO3. demonstrate knowledge of suitable models of pedagogy for teaching and assessing languages in the primary school, and suitable ways to differentiate the curriculum for individual students.
  • LO4. demonstrate a deep and broad understanding of the relationship between language and culture, and the ability to implement intercultural language teaching in primary school language program.
  • LO5. demonstrate a research-based approach to teaching based on a critical analysis of curriculum-related documents.
