EXSS5065: Clinical Exercise Science Case Studies 1

This unit will develop a high level of knowledge, clinical decision making and problem-solving skill by using complex cases related to clinical exercise physiology practice. The cases will include pathologies from the cardiopulmonary, neuromuscular and metabolic areas. Academic staff and experienced Exercise Physiology practitioners will use clinical scenarios and problem-based learning to guide students through the process of selecting and administering appropriate screening and assessment tools and developing effective, individualized exercise management plans. The clinical scenarios will present more complex cases than previously covered and will require the student to integrate prior knowledge and experiences with new learning.

Assessment summary

  1. A written, online exam comprising a number of short answer and long answer questions covering diagnostic electrocardiography (60 min)
  2. A written assignment in the form of an exercise program for a client demonstrating: sound physiological understanding, critical appraisal of test validity/reliability, and exercise training principles with clear use of evidence-based practice.  Combined with oral presentation and defense of the program to assess the ability to rationalise decisions and the use of scientific evidence to support these (20 min)
  3. The final exam will test the student’s knowledge of material covered in all lectures and practicals for the entire semester. The exam will comprise short answer and long questions. (120 min)

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: Attendance at all lectures, case studies, tutorials, and practical classes is an expected component of this unit.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.
