2020 unit information

This unit will investigate the historical forms of daily writing in France, and how such forms have contributed to the structuring of private and public identity. It will examine the links between technological innovation and the emergence of daily writing, and will concentrate in particular on the development of the private 'journal' (diary) and the public 'journal' (newspaper) in nineteenth-century France.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Name the historical, cultural and technological factors that contributed to the emergence of daily writing in France
  • LO2. Identify various genres of daily writing in French and explain the relationship between them and the context in which they were produced
  • LO3. Demonstrate a practical and theoretical understanding of diary writing in French
  • LO4. Apply techniques for close reading of short passages in French
  • LO5. Communicate ideas effectively in French in a classroom setting
