This unit will investigate the historical forms of daily writing in France, and how such forms have contributed to the structuring of private and public identity. It will examine the links between technological innovation and the emergence of daily writing, and will concentrate in particular on the development of the private �journal' (diary) and the public �journal' (newspaper) in nineteenth-century France.
