Overview

This unit aims to develop students' speaking, writing and reading skills for the intermediate level of Japanese, so that they are able to use Japanese in a variety of situations. Students will be expected to achieve the following linguistic skills: switch to appropriate speech style in formal and informal situations; express opinions and thoughts; write about 350 kanji and recognise at least 600 kanji. Writing and reading practice will consolidate grammatical, lexical and cultural knowledge.

Appropriate adjustments will be made to any assessment task that a student cannot complete due to travel bans or quarantine requirements.

Class participation
Make sure to prepare every week: read the material assigned, complete workbook and online activities (including the self-tests), and learn new vocabulary and kanji. Be ready to participate actively on Zoom. It is the coordinator’s preference that all students turn ON their cameras.
Online quizzes
Complete all online quizzes, as well as online self-tests, by the time assigned. These are often before classes, in order to help you revise new learning and prepare for classes in the days ahead.
Communication task
After our first class meeting, you will need to sign up to work with a partner(s). You will work as a team to develop a role-play in preparation for your Communication presentation (i.e., speaking test).
You will be given a choice of topics and will select your topic as a team and will work together to write a draft script for a role-play on that topic.
Communication presentation (Speaking test)
Your team will perform your role-play for the class (or tutor, TBD) via Zoom.
After your team has performed your role-play, your teacher will ask one or two simple questions in Japanese to each of you, based on your presentation.
Listening exam
You will listen to recorded conversations that you have not heard or seen before, of a similar level of difficulty to the conversation and listening texts in Lessons 5-7 in our textbook. They will be on familiar themes from Lessons 1 to 7, and will contain familiar grammar and vocabulary. All questions are multiple choice.
Final exam
Prepare by revising material learnt in Lessons 1–7 of our textbook in addition, of course, to assumed knowledge on the basis of pre-requisites for this unit.
You will be asked questions on:
- a modfied version of one 'seen' reading passage (testing grammar);
- one 'unseen' reading passage (testing grammar and comprehension);
- writing and grammar, for example: writing/re-writing using correct grammar points; fill-in-the-blank style questions within an unseen passage; kanji questions.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

The Assessment Procedures 2011 provide that any written work submitted after the due date will be penalised by 5% of the maximum awardable mark for each calendar day after the due date. If the assessment is submitted more than ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded. Note that in the Intensive July iteration of this course, in some cases it may not be possible to accept late assignments. Please make sure to keep an open line of commutation with your tutor/coordinator.

Special consideration

If you experience short-term circumstances beyond your control, such as illness, injury or misadventure or if you have essential commitments which impact your preparation or performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Academic integrity

Attendance and class requirements

Zoom classes in this unit may be recorded and made available to students but students should not reply on the recorded lectures/tutorials as a substitue for attending classes.
Students are expected to attend all scheduled Zoom sessions and participate actively with cameras turned on.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

Closing the loop

While many students indicated the value of completing online quizzes before classes each week, a few were unsure about why they were being asked to undertake some assessment tasks on material that we had not yet covered in class. They suggested that we consider having these quizzes after classes instead. However, we schedule some of the quizzes before class to ensure that when you come to class you are not encountering the material for the first time, but that you are already sufficiently familiar with the content to be able to engage in more stimulating, deep learning activities. Each of these quizzes is worth only a tiny proportion of your final mark; its primary purpose is to help you learn. Thanks to some helpful suggestions from the previous cohort, we have made some changes to the organisation of the website this semester, to ensure you know just what you are expected to do, and when.
