Semester 2, 2021 [Normal day] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

This unit of study will develop the student's knowledge of the professional practice of diagnostic radiography, predominantly of the axial skeleton. The techniques covered will build upon routine procedures that the student will encounter in the workplace. Anatomy, physiology and pathology will be integrated with corresponding imaging techniques of selected body systems. Planar anatomy and imaging will be included as appropriate. Students will be expected to supplement and broaden their learning by independent research on relevant topics.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Attendance and class requirements

You are required to review and study pre-recorded lectures, and lectures and tutorials available on canvas, weekly. Self-Learning Positioning Videos will be available on Canvas; review each week's videos before your practical class.

Download and complete your practical book on a weekly basis.

All Practical Classes which are not electronically recorded ,require 100% attendance due to the intensive nature of this unit of study. Students failing to attend at this level may have a pro-rata reduction in their UoS mark applied.

Practical classes will be conducted under the safety requirements of the University of Sydney Covid-19 return to campus plan. Please follow all directions provided by staff.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

  • LO1. discuss the fundamentals of practice for diagnostic radiography related to the femur, hip, pelvis, abdomen/urinary systems, cervical spine, thoracic spine, lumbar and sacral spine, and identify pathologies associated with these body areas
  • LO2. discuss the fundamentals of practice for computed tomography: parameters, protocols and radiation protection as related to the role of a diagnostic radiographer
  • LO3. utilise theoretical knowledge of the anatomy displayed in cross sectional anatomy imaging of the chest, abdomen and pelvis
  • LO4. acquire an ongoing knowledge of the role diagnostic radiography plays in the care of patients for a range of clinical presentations related to the topics listed in learning outcome 1
  • LO5. utilise theoretical knowledge of the anatomy, physiology, pathology and cross sectional anatomy of the male and female reproductive systems and the urinary systems
  • LO6. demonstrate an awareness of the importance of effective communication and radiation dose in clinical and academic settings
  • LO7. demonstrate an awareness of the importance of employing appropriate occupational health and safety work practices while on clinical placement
  • LO8. apply the discipline specific theoretical principles of practice to the clinical setting.
