Semester 2, 2022 [Normal day] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

This unit of study provides an opportunity to critically explore specific advanced Medical Imaging Science practices including diagnostic ultrasound and image interpretation. It concludes the course with a capstone experience where students will build upon previous units of study to consolidate and demonstrate professional competencies, learning abilities and the graduate qualities of the University. The focus will be on consolidating specialized knowledge and skills for research-led professional practice, and curating evidence of this through a capstone portfolio of achievements.

Assessment summary

  • RadFolio: Students will develop a diagnostic radiography ePortfolio site (RadFolio).
  • Image interpretation class test: This test will assess students’ knowledge of the topics covered in all the lectures, readings on image interpretation.
  • Sonography class test: This test will assess students’ knowledge of the topics covered in all the lectures, readings and tutorials provided on clinical sonography

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: Students are expected to attend all scheduled tutorials and participate in discussions and activities. Lectures are online and are a vital component of learning. All Canvas materials including all readings are an integral and examinable requirement of this Unit.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

This section outlines changes made to this unit following staff and student reviews.

Four wonderful students (6% of the class) took the trouble to complete the USS in 2021 and provide me with feedback. It was greatly appreciated as I had to run this unit quite differently due to the restrictions of the pandemic and the adjustments to the clinical placement program. While the response rate was a bit disappointing, it was understandable given we had to run it virtually due to lock down. In addition to the USS, I had called for, and received, a number of feedback emails as well, and a huge thanks to those students too. The mean satisfaction score for ‘quality of teaching by the teacher(s)’ was 4.83 (out of 5.0), up from 4.31 last year, which is very pleasing but must be taken in the context of low numbers of responses. The scores for the 5 other questions varied from 4.50 to 5.00. Put another way, for each question, approx. 70-100% of students agreed, or strongly agreed, positively with statements such as having good access to valuable learning resources, and the unit improving your confidence for your future professional work. The lowest scoring item at 4.50 / 5.00 was ‘The practical and applied components improved my understanding of the topics covered’. I’m sure that being unable to run our normal practical classes in the Medical Imaging Suite (we normally run hands-on ultrasound practicals in this unit) was the problem there. While the numbers are good, the most important thing I find is the comments you provide. As a qualitative researcher, I look for patterns, clusters and themes in the comments in order to address student concerns. Most students enjoyed all three modules, some typical statements being: ‘The radfolio was a very unique assessment task and allowed students to really reflect on their growth over the course of the degree beyond what would have occurred without this task being completed.’, ‘The RadFolio also helped when it came to preparing for job applications and interviews…’, ‘…sonography itself was interesting so I liked learning about it’ The thing respondents felt most needed improvement was explaining the RadFolio task earlier and with more detail, which I have worked on for 2022. Some students took the time to give detailed comments, which I really appreciate. We had some great compliments, thank you, and some very useful constructive criticism. One student responded to the question ‘What have been the best aspects of this unit of study?’ with: ‘Everything! I've enjoyed learning about sonography, the RadFolio and the [image interpretation]. I also felt really supported with how easy it was to contact [the UoS Coordinator]!’. Thank you to that person!!
