MRTY2102: Radiographic Evaluation 1

Semester 1, 2020 [Normal day] - Cumberland, Sydney

This unit of study builds upon foundation knowledge of imaging technology, image quality and radiographic anatomy. Students will be expected to evaluate general radiographic images for quality and interpret plain radiographs for common pathologies and normal variants. This unit of study combines an evidence based approach using research articles applied to case based learning.

Assessment summary

  • Online MCQ exam: A 25 item multiple choice questions, true/false, multiple answer, hot spot, jumbled sentence, short essay on-line test on lecture and tutorial material presented in weeks 1-5 inclusive.
  • OSCE: Practical examination of appendicular skeleton radiography as part of a larger OSCE for MRTY2101, 2102 and 2014.  Conducted in week 10.
  • End of semester exam:  This assessment is in week 12 and assesses lecture and tutorial material weeks 6-10inclusive.  This is planned to be an on-line assessment with the same structure as the week 6 assessment.  A pass is required in this assessment in order to pass the unit of study.

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: The attendance requirement for lectures and practicals/tutorials is 80%.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

  • LO2. adapt radiographic techniques to compliment clinical histories that indicate medically urgent findings on appendicular skeletal radiographs
  • LO3. apply critical and reflective thinking to clinical scenarios and how decisions made by radiographers impact upon the diagnostic quality of the image and the radiation dose to the patient
  • LO4. demonstrate a systematic approach to image interpretation including an ability to undertake a review of image quality
  • LO5. evaluate appendicular radiographs for image quality including noise, contrast and appropriate technique
  • LO6. discuss medical images with patients, consumers and professional staff in relation to the role performed by radiographers
  • LO7. identify and discuss a range of anatomical structures, injuries and diseases in planar images of the appendicular skeleton
  • LO8. identify normal variants on appendicular skeletal radiographs

This section outlines changes made to this unit following staff and student reviews.

The tutorials will be presented by Peter O'Reilly this semester as there was a staff change that took place last year. The tutorials will be kept to time and will be conducted as group discussion. The lectures have been reviewed and made less dense and will have learning objectives included. The practice quizzes have always had unlimited attempts allowed and there will be more feedback comments included. This unit does address a large amount of material and will require constant attention by all students as this is not soley interpreting a radiograph rather it requires a problem-based approach in order to rationally understand the connection of the clinical history, the possible injuries sustained and what their appearances may be then to appreciate any change in the normality of the anatomy on the radiograph.
