This unit of study aims to tie together all of the clinical and theoretical knowledge gained through evidence based oral health clinical practice related to the scope of practice for Oral Health Therapists. This includes extended age range for restorative treatment.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. display the knowledge for a developing understanding of the full scope of practice of an oral health therapist
  • LO2. demonstrate competency integrating all previous learning and clinical experience into a deeper understanding of clinical reasoning, diagnosis, treatment planning and intervention and control of disease
  • LO3. discuss the research and communication skills necessary for the acquisition, advancement and dissemination of knowledge
  • LO4. demonstrate developing competency integrating all previous learning and clinical experience into a deeper understanding of clinical reasoning, diagnosis, treatment planning and intervention and control of disease
  • LO5. discuss the methods and benefits, and analyse the findings of additional assessment data, including diagnostic tests, study models; intraoral photographs; and vitality testing, in both written and oral formats
  • LO6. present a diagnostic summary of the case with a thorough and systematic analyses of relevant patient data and risk factors
  • LO7. display the necessary knowledge for a comprehensive understanding of the full scope of practice of an oral health therapist
  • LO8. demonstrate effective organisation and time management skills, sound scientific and medical knowledge with evidence-based dental knowledge
  • LO9. demonstrate developing/comprehensive organisation and time management skills, sound scientific and medical knowledge with evidence-based dental knowledge
  • LO10. identify and discuss the components of a patient case file, including all data gathered, the links that exist between these, and the therapeutic interventions and strategies of patient care, recognising the need for consultation and referral
  • LO11. within the scope of an oral health therapist and congruent with treatment plans by the dentist, demonstrate the ability to establish and implement a treatment plan using an evidence-based and patient-centred approach
