PHAR3816: Cardiovascular and Renal

Semester 1a, 2023 [Normal day] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

This unit of study will cover the therapeutics of cardiovascular and renal disorders including the pharmaceutical sciences that underpin such drug therapies. This unit will also include the epidemiology, pathophysiology and clinical features of cardiovascular and renal disorders. Through the use of case-based learning, students will participate in the interpretation, application and dissemination of pharmaceutical and pharmacotherapeutic concepts and knowledge. On completion of this unit of study students will be able to apply an understanding of the pharmaceutical sciences to optimising the drug and non-drug therapy of patients with cardiovascular and renal disorders. Interprofessional communication and the application of specialist knowledge to implementing pharmacist cognitive services such as clinical interventions and/or medication management review will also be explored. Students will become familiar with drug information software and a number of computerised drug information databases. Role-plays will be used to develop students' communication skills for interaction between pharmacists and their clients (patients, doctors, other health professionals).

Assessment summary

  • Exam: This examination will be based on lecture and tutorial material from the Cardiovascular and Renal unit of study. The examination will comprise of a combination of MCQs and SAQs. The Exam format will be announced closer to the date. The Replacement Exam will be held in the formal Semester 1 Replacement Exam Period.

  • Tutorial participation/Quiz: The tutorials are designed to help students integrate and apply the knowledge and skills acquired in lectures and other related activities, in the management of patients’ health needs and problems, and other clinical issues they are likely to encounter as a practising pharmacist. The tutorials will emphasise the application of ‘processes’ in practising as a pharmacist, especially communication processes incorporating information gathering, information processing, and information delivery. The students are expected to do prep-work prior to the tutorial and attempt a short online Quiz at the start of the tutorial. Facilitators will also mark students for participation and professionalism. All five tutorials make up 10% of the Unit of Study mark, with 2 out of 10 marks awarded per tutorial. To receive the two marks, students must attend tutorial, participate in group discussions, behave in a professional manner and pass the online short pre-work quiz.

  • OSCE: The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) has four stations. Each student will be given time to prepare multiple cases beforehand. After the preparation time, each student will discuss the topics, issues, and concerns identified with examiners at four stations (two pseudo-doctor and two pseudo-patient stations).

Supplementary Yr assessments: Students may be offered re-assessment of compulsory-to-pass assessments, in the Replacement exam periods (RE1/RE2) at the end of the year, as described in the Third Year Rule (2022). For more information see the announcement on the Canvas year site.

Repeating students: Exemption from components (tutorials etc) for students repeating PHAR3816 will not be granted unless exceptional circumstances exist and approval from the Program Director has been granted.

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: Students are required to attend at least 80% of face-to-face tutorials (i.e. at least 4 out of 5 tutorials), even when they have approved Special Consideration for absence.   

If you are unable to attend a tutorial, you must contact the unit of study coordinator as soon as possible to see if you can attend another tutorial if available. The unit of study coordinator may determine that a student fails a unit of study because of inadequate attendance.

If a tutorial is missed due to illness or misadventure, students are to submit a special consideration application along with supporting documentation.

Students arriving more than 10 minutes after the commencement of the laboratory / workshop / placement will be marked as unprofessional, which is a component of the class participation and professionalism assessment. Students swapping a class without prior approval from the UoS co-ordinator will be marked as unprofessional.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 5 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 100-125 hours of student effort in total.
