PHAR3817: Respiratory

Semester 1a, 2022 [Normal day] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

This unit of study will cover the therapeutics of respiratory disorders including the pharmaceutical sciences that underpin such drug therapies. This unit will also include the epidemiology, pathophysiology and clinical features of respiratory disorders. Through the use of case-based learning, students will participate in the interpretation, application and dissemination of pharmaceutical and pharmacotherapeutic concepts and knowledge. On completion of this unit of study students will be able to apply an understanding of the pharmaceutical sciences to optimising the drug and non-drug therapy of patients with respiratory disorders. Interprofessional communication and the application of specialist knowledge to implementing pharmacist cognitive services such as clinical interventions and/or medication management review will also be explored. Students will become familiar with drug information software and a number of computerised drug information databases. Role-plays will be used to develop students' communication skills for interaction between pharmacists and their clients (patients, doctors, other health professionals).

Assessment summary

  • Exam: This examination will be based on lecture and tutorial material from the Respiratory unit of study. The examination will comprise of a combination of MCQs and SAQs. Your Exam will be conducted using an Online Platform. If you wish to sit your exam on-campus, a limited number of on-campus places will be available through an online booking system. Replacement Exam for this Unit of Study will be offered in the Formal Replacement Exam Period.

  • Tutorial participation and prep-work: The tutorials are designed to help students integrate and apply the knowledge and skills acquired in lectures and other related activities, in the management of patients’ health needs and problems, and other clinical issues they are likely to encounter as a practising pharmacist. The tutorials will emphasise the application of ‘processes’ in practising as a pharmacist, especially communication processes incorporating information gathering, information processing, and information delivery. The students are expected to submit answers to prep-work question beforehand via Canvas, which will be viewed by facilitators. Facilitators will also mark students for professionalism and participation. All 5 tutorials make up 10% of the Unit of Study Mark. Hence each tutorial is worth 2%.

  • OSCE: The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) has four stations. Each student will be given time to prepare multiple cases beforehand. After the preparation time, each student will discuss the topics, issues, and concerns identified with examiners at four stations (two pseudo-doctor and two pseudo patient stations).

All assessments components must be passed (i.e., 50%) to satisfy the requirements of the unit of study. A fail in a compulsory assessment will result in an overall grade of fail for that unit of study. Detailed information for each assessment can be found on Canvas.

  • Supplementary Yr assessments: Students may be offered re-assessment of compulsory-to-pass assessments, in the Replacement exam periods (RE1/RE2) at the end of the year, as described in the Third Year Rule (2022). For more information see the announcement on the Canvas year site.
  • Repeating students: Exemption from components (tutorials etc) for students repeating PHAR3817 will not be granted, unless exceptional circumstances exist and prior permission from the Program Director (Undergraduate) has been obtained for an exemption.

Assessment criteria

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: Students are required to attend at least 80% of tutorials (i.e. at least 4 out of 5), even when they have approved Special Consideration for absence. For students enrolled in Camperdown Campus face-to-face teaching, this means that they are required to attend on campus.  For students enrolled in Remote Learning, this means that they have to attend the online ZOOM tutorials for the duration of the tutorial.

If you are unable to attend a tutorial, you must contact the unit of study coordinator as soon as possible to see if you can attend another tutorial if available. The unit of study coordinator may determine that a student fails a unit of study because of inadequate attendance.

If a tutorial/ lab/workshop is missed due to illness or misadventure, students are to submit a special consideration application along with supporting documentation.

Students arriving more than 10 minutes after the commencement of the tutorial/ lab/ workshop will be marked as absent. Students swapping a class without prior approval from the UoS co-ordinator will be marked as absent.”

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 5 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 100-125 hours of student effort in total.

1. Lectures have been scheduled as much as possible before the relevant tutorials. Please note, it may not always be possible to post lecture notes well in advance of the scheduled time slot. The Coordinator will aim to ensure lectures slides are posted prior to the lecture. 2. Pre-work teampltes where applicable have been added where possible. 3. Oral exam practice is now more formalised.

For any queries around the content, taught in lectures or tutorials, the most effective option would be to email the lecturer, copying in the coordinator. This is effective as the actual content expert is best placed to answer specific questions. If you write to the coordinator, they may also email the lecturer – in which case by writing to the lecturer directly you may receive your answer one step quicker.

The email contact of most lecturers will be available in their lecture notes (PowerPoint slides). When you write to them – copying in the coordinator is important, as the coordinator may also be able to anwer or they can request other experts if the lecturer cannot respond.

Canvas Discussion Board will be used as the medium of discussion, please make sure you also use this feature. The coordinator may also post replies to your queries on the Canvas Discussion Board if they feel the information is important for the class to know.
