This unit of study focuses on the skills required to succeed in contemporary workplaces. It covers three essential topics: accounting and financial management, human resource management and marketing in the context of community and/or hospital pharmacy. Included are workshops that explore problem solving, decision making and leadership across both theoretical and practical applications. Material in each topic is relevant to students developing their professional skills and preparing for future management roles.

Assessment summary

  • Elevator pitch: In groups, students will brainstorm and research an area of need related to pharmacy, and come up with innovative solutions to address that need. Students will then document the processes undertaken, refine the idea, outline their decision making process and present it in class. Following the presentation, students will complete a peer assessment on the contribution made by themselves and the other members of their team.
  • Case study: In groups, students will deconstruct and critique a business plan outline. Students will then complete a peer-assessment on the contribution made by themselves and the other members of their team.
  • Tutorial participation and pre-work: Students are expected to participate in class discussion and to have read all relevant text readings, as well as pre and post work across all three modules.
  • Final exam: This examination will cover all three modules, based on lectures, tutorial material and readings, incorporating finance, marketing and human resources.

  • Group Work: Peer assessment (relative performance factor) will be applied to moderate the groupwork marks. Students will take part in a formative peer assessment conducted in week 6, and a summative peer assessment in week 11. Peer assessment will be completed online to obtain a factor between 0-1, and will be according to an agreed set of criteria established by groups in session 1.
  • Repeating students: Exemption from components (tutorials, workshops etc) for students repeating PHAR4814 will not be granted./ Exemption from components (laboratory, practical, forensics etc) for students repeating PHAR4814 will only be granted by the Year co-ordinator for students who achieved a grade of Credit (65%) or above for the relevant components in their previous attempt completed no more than three calendar years prior, and the relevant component has not significantly changed since the student completed it. Applications for exemption must be made in writing (which includes email) to the unit of study coordinator. Students who have been granted a component exemption in writing, together with any consequent change in the weighting of the remaining components in the unit of study, cannot attend the classes for that component and will have their overall mark for PHAR4814 based upon their performance in the remaining components in the unit of study. Component marks from a previous attempt will not be carried over. The exemption will not become effective until the student has accepted it in writing. Until this time the student must continue to attend all compulsory classes. If an exemption is accepted, the exempted student is not permitted to attend classes for the component for which they have received the exemption

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

At DI level, a student demonstrates an aptitude for the subject and a well-developed understanding of the units material. A ‘Distinction’ reflects excellent achievement and is awarded to a student who demonstrates an ability to apply their subject knowledge and understanding of the subject to produce good solutions for challenging problems and/or a reasonably well-developed critical analysis of theoretical concepts.

65 - 74

At CR level, a student demonstrates a good command and knowledge of the unit material. A ‘Credit’ reflects solid achievement and is awarded to a student who has a broad general understanding of the units material and can solve routine problems and/ or identify and superficially discuss theoretical concepts.

Pass

50 - 64

At PS level, a student demonstrates proficiency in the material. A ‘Pass’ reflects satisfactory adequately referencing the original source of the work.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

This unit has an exception to the standard University policy or supplementary information has been provided by the unit coordinator. This information is displayed below:

Academic integrity

We use similarity detection software to detect potential instances of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breach. If such matches indicate evidence of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breaches, your teacher is required to report your work for further investigation.

You may only use artificial intelligence and writing assistance tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator, and if you do use them, you must also acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section.

Studiosity is permitted for postgraduate units unless otherwise indicated by the unit coordinator. The use of this service must be acknowledged in your submission.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: In accordance with the Bachelor of Pharmacy Course resolutions on Attendance Requirements, students must attend a minimum of 85% tutorials/ labs/ workshops (8 of 9 classes) to satisfy attendance requirements for this unit of study. If a tutorial/ lab/workshop is missed due to illness or misadventure, students are to submit a special consideration application along with supporting documentation. Students arriving more than 10 minutes after the commencement of the tutorial/ lab/ workshop will be marked as absent. Students swapping a class without prior approval from the UoS co-ordinator will be marked as absent.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.
