PHTY5201: Physiotherapy across the Lifespan

Semester 2, 2022 [Normal day] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

This unit of study comprises two modules consisting of the delivery of preventative and rehabilitative physiotherapy services across the lifespan in selected populations and settings. Specifically, the delivery of physiotherapy services will be addressed in: paediatrics and ageing and health. In the paediatrics module students will become aware of the changes which occur from infancy through to maturity in neuromotor, musculoskeletal and cardiopulmonary development and will address issues related to physiotherapy intervention in children with potential dysfunction in those systems. The emphasis of this module will be on problem solving relevant clinical scenarios via an approach of clinical reasoning. In considering the older population, students will explore strategies to maintain and improve the health of older people and to support them within their community if they do develop illness or disease. Specifically, they will look at topics such as falls screening and prevention and the coordination of health, social and other services to assist older people.

Assessment summary

  • Developmental Milestones Table: Create a developmental motor skills table from 3 months to 5 years of age using supplied template.
  • Gross Motor Skill Activity Template submission: Design a gross motor skill (GMS) activity as a group following a provided template.
  • Written Assignment: 1500-word academic writing report as a group based on an assigned paediatric topic.
  • In semester exam: This exam will cover all material covered in lectures, tutorials, and essential readings as referred to in lectures and tutorials for the Aging and Health module.
  • Final exam: This exam will cover all material covered in lectures, tutorials, and essential readings as referred to in lectures and tutorials for the Paediatric Physiotherapy module.

Late submission

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: Students are expected to attend a minimum of 80% of tutorials for a unit of study, unless granted exemption by the Dean, Head of School, or Professor most concerned. The Dean, Head of School, or Professor most concerned may determine that a student fails a unit of study because of inadequate tutorial attendance. Alternatively, at their discretion, they may set additional assessment items where attendance is lower than 80%. All lectures in this unit of study will be conducted online, either pre-recorded or live. Lecture recordings will be made available to assist with revision and study. 

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. demonstrate an understanding of the roles of the various professionals, including physiotherapists, who work in the area of aged care and have a working knowledge of relevant legislation pertaining to management of older people with health needs
  • LO2. explain how older people are managed in a variety of residential and hospital settings, and the services that are available for them
  • LO3. identify factors that may place an individual at risk of falling, perform assessment of such risks, discuss the acute and chronic effects of falls, and derive programs, based on best practice guidelines, to minimise falls risk in older people, and to treat individuals who have sustained a fall
  • LO4. examine the potential effects of cognitive decline in older people
  • LO5. understand the key issues around such areas as elder abuse and palliative care in the ageing population
  • LO6. demonstrate an understanding of the roles that physiotherapists and other health professionals play in amputation and burns management.
  • LO7. solve relevant paediatric clinical problems accessing appropriate resources and using a process of clinical reasoning
  • LO8. demonstrate an understanding of typical growth and development from birth to adolescence, and discuss the occurrence of variations in typical development and possible reasons for these
  • LO9. describe the potential impact of atypical development on the skeletal, respiratory, and neurological systems
  • LO10. identify the potential psychosocial impact of illness, disease, and/or disability on a child, their family, and their community
  • LO11. understand how to communicate with children and families, taking into account cultural diversity
  • LO12. understand and know the professional responsibilities and ethical conduct when working with paediatric patients and their families
  • LO13. select paediatric physiotherapy interventions based on the best evidence available, and identify how the intervention would be managed and evaluated
  • LO14. describe a plan of management for a paediatric problem that also recognises the potential role of other health practitioners.
