QBUS3330: Methods of Decision Analysis

This introductory unit on decision analysis addresses the formal methods of decision making. These methods include measuring risk by subjective probabilities; growing decision trees; performing sensitivity analysis; using theoretical probability distributions; simulation of uncertain events; modelling risk attitudes; estimating the value of information; and combining quantitative and qualitative considerations. The primary goal of the unit is to demonstrate how to build models of real business situations that allow the decision maker to better understand the structure of decisions and to automate the decision process by using computer decision tools.

Assessment summary

  • Assignment 1: The assignment will be broken down into 3-4 small homework tasks which will be completed on Canvas. These involve using the methods and models discussed in lectures to solve decision-making problems that arise in the business world. Students should demonstrate sufficient understanding of the theoretical principles in this unit, including data collection, model selection and design, application, and the ability to draw meaningful inferences based on the data and model output. The assignments will involve analysis of data using computer tools, as well as draw on more theoretical material from lectures.
  • Assignment 2: The assignment will focus on studying a real-life or simulated business problem which can be analysed using the tools and methods covered in the unit. Students will be expected to select the correct models, provide an in-depth analysis of the data and information using the appropriate models and present a discussion on the output. Students are expected to identify the strengths and weaknesses of their analysis and suggest courses of actions for the stakeholders.
  • Mid-semester exam: This is an online open book exam and will examine concepts covered in weeks 1-6 of this unit. The questions will measure students’ knowledge of the major principles in decision making and their ability to provide a complete and comprehensible description of their essential characteristics, as well as their ability to complete standard analytical tasks, as discussed in weeks 1-6 of this unit. It may include both MCQ and written answer questions. 
  • Final exam: This is a closed book exam and will assess all aspects of this unit from weeks 1-13. A sheet containing the key formulas will be provided with the exam. The exam will be online using one of the university approved platforms. The exam will be marked for correctness, understanding of underlying material and clarity of exposition and presentation.

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Studiosity is permitted for postgraduate units unless otherwise indicated by the unit coordinator. The use of this service must be acknowledged in your submission.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.
