This unit explores key debates in Socio-Legal Studies. Students will gain knowledge of theoretical perspectives and examine how they can be used to explain complex socio-legal problems. The unit starts by identifying foundational debates in law and society, focusing on classical sociological theorists and their examination of modernity. We then explore how feminist, queer, critical race, and postcolonial theories critiqued these foundations. In the third section, we focus on key legal challenges of today’s world - globalisation, biotechnology, climate change, artificial intelligence - to ask how social theory can assist us in tackling them.
