The field of clinical and patient education is addressed in the context of the healthcare environment with emphasis on continuing changes in technologies, information and evidence bases for practice. The unit involves a study of the literature on the nature of learned and performed skills and what impact they may have on the delivery of effective education in clinical settings. The unit also explores the role of the registered nurse in relation to patient education, staff education and student supervision.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. explore and examine the role of clinical teaching and patient education within the patient safety and quality agenda in health
  • LO2. apply foundational health education theory and concepts to the role of the registered nurse with respect to students, clients and health professionals
  • LO3. apply and adapt basic principles of clinical and patient education to a variety of healthcare contexts and settings
  • LO4. develop communication skills and strategies useful within clinical and patient education contexts
  • LO5. determine and plan appropriate mechanisms for evaluating the quality and effectiveness of clinical and patient education sessions
  • LO6. identify and discuss the role of information and communication technologies in clinical and patient education
  • LO7. develop further ethical behaviours to work with individuals, families, groups and teams in a humanistic and caring manner.
