SNGP3003: Clinical and Patient Education

The field of clinical and patient education is addressed in the context of the healthcare environment with emphasis on continuing changes in technologies, information and evidence bases for practice. The unit involves a study of the literature on the nature of learned and performed skills and what impact they may have on the delivery of effective education in clinical settings. The unit also explores the role of the registered nurse in relation to patient education, staff education and student supervision.

Assessment summary

  • Assessment 1: In class assessment: In this assessment students will complete an inclass supervised quiz.
  • Assessment 2: Teaching project: This written assessment will be 2500 words and will demonstrate an understanding of the links between educational theory and clinical education in practice. 
  • Assessment 3: Final exam: A supervised written exam of 2 hours duration with short and long answer questions addressing all of the unit content.

Assessment criteria

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

  • Attendance: 

    It is expected that all students participate and fully engage with this unit of study by attending all teaching-related activity (e.g. lectures, tutorials, laboratories, workshops), being prepared for tutorials and laboratories or workshops, contributing to discussions in class and online, and providing and receiving feedback in a respectful and professional manner.

    In line with the Singapore Nursing Board (SNB) accredited curriculum, students are required to attend a minimum of 90% of all lectures, and 100% of tutorials, clinical simulation laboratories or workshops. Students who are absent for more than 10% of classes in a particular unit of study in any one semester, without permission or approval from the Unit of Study Coordinator are at risk of being deemed to have failed that unit of study  
  • Referencing style: The Sydney Nursing School has adopted the American Psychological Association (APA) Referencing style, 7th Edition, 2020 as its official referencing style. This is an author-date style of referencing.
  • Assignment formatting guidelines: Unless the unit coordinator has indicated otherwise, please make sure your submitted assessments are formatted as follows:
    • font: use Calibri or Times New Roman in 11 - 12 point
    • double line spacing
    • margins: 2.5cm each side
    • use page numbers
    • refer to assessment instructions for use of title and headings

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

Learning outcomes are what students know, understand and are able to do on completion of a unit of study. They are aligned with the University's graduate qualities and are assessed as part of the curriculum.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO2. apply foundational health education theory and concepts to the role of the registered nurse with respect to students, clients and health professionals
  • LO3. apply and adapt basic principles of clinical and patient education to a variety of healthcare contexts and settings
  • LO4. develop communication skills and strategies useful within clinical and patient education contexts
  • LO5. determine and plan appropriate mechanisms for evaluating the quality and effectiveness of clinical and patient education sessions
  • LO6. identify and discuss the role of information and communication technologies in clinical and patient education
  • LO7. develop further ethical behaviours to work with individuals, families, groups and teams in a humanistic and caring manner.

This section outlines changes made to this unit following staff and student reviews.

The unit is reviewed on an annual basis and changes made in accordance with Unit of Study Survey results and student feedback. This year the in class assessment was moved to the final day of teaching in response to feedback. content was update to cover current trend in nursing education. This year updates include contemporary issues in nurse education and the inclass quiz has been moved to the final evening of teaching.
