VETS6306: Exotic and Wildlife Practice

Semester 1, 2022 [Normal day] - Camden, Sydney

This unit will cover the basic husbandry of commonly kept exotic pets and wildlife species presented to veterinarians. Applied anatomy of these species will be taught so that students will be able to safely handle these animals, complete physical examinations of them, collect diagnostic samples from them, interpret radiographs and other images of them, treat them, and undertake common surgical procedures on them. Common disease processes and their manifestations, treatments, and prevention will be discussed. Upon completion of this unit of study, students will be comfortable seeing these species in their practice for routine appointments, and will be aware when referral to a specialist is indicated.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Studiosity is permitted for postgraduate units unless otherwise indicated by the unit coordinator. The use of this service must be acknowledged in your submission.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 3 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 60-75 hours of student effort in total.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. educate bird and exotic pet owners and wildlife carers on the proper husbandry of their animal so as to prevent husbandry related diseases and behavioural problems
  • LO2. formulate a problem list, differential diagnosis, and treatment plan for birds, exotic pets, and wildlife, using information obtained from the consultation and ancillary diagnostics
  • LO3. develop anaesthesia protocols and justify routinely used surgical and invasive procedures for birds, exotic pets and wildlife that are appropriate for their distinctive anatomy, physiology and clinical condition.

This section outlines changes made to this unit following staff and student reviews.

Next year, I intend to decrease the amount of overall material covered to some extent and to place a greater emphasis on the process of working up cases. The exams will also reflect this change in emphasis.
