VSAO5641: Graduate Lyric Diction Italian and Latin

2026 unit information

In this unit of study, students will be introduced to lyric diction in Italian and Latin, focusing on International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) literacy and foundational speech anatomy. Through theoretical instruction and applied practice, students will develop skills at postgraduate level in phonation, articulation, and pronunciation as they relate to the classical singing voice and the relevant applications for collaborative pianists, répétiteurs, conductors, and composers.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Read and transcribe Italian and Latin repertoire accurately using IPA.
  • LO2. Demonstrate fundamental phonetic and phonatory knowledge.
  • LO3. Apply diction principles to short performance excerpts.
  • LO4. Begin refining pronunciation and text clarity in song.
  • LO5. Identify key phonetic distinctions between Italian and Latin.
