At the University of Sydney, we champion a human-centred approach to artificial intelligence (AI). Our mission is to harness this emerging technology in ways that benefit our people, community, society and planet.

We are defining what AI leadership means in higher education by developing innovative learning experiences, working with it to drive discovery, and addressing its complex environmental and social challenges through our research.

Within and beyond our university, we are shaping what responsible AI looks like. We work closely with our industry, education and community partners to advance AI fluency and strengthen public trust, accountability and integrity as AI adoption grows across society.

Across our campuses, we provide equitable access to AI tools and training, equipping our community with the skills needed to thrive in their study and work.

Leading the way for university education in the age of AI

Sydney graduates leave with disciplinary expertise and demonstrable skills in critical thinking, creativity, and judgement – distinctly human capabilities that technology cannot replace.

With human capability as our core focus, we work with AI to create educational experiences that encourage students to deepen their learning, seek feedback, and develop their own perspectives. Our Sydney-developed platform, Cogniti, gives educators control over learning design and student interactions. The award-winning tool is now used worldwide to deliver personalised learning experiences that nurture students' own reasoning and judgement. 

We ensure that AI is not doing the thinking for our students by upholding high standards of academic integrity. Through our sector-leading Sydney Assessment Framework, we ensure our qualifications continue to provide both trusted evidence of what students know and can do, and ensure students have the human and technical capabilities they will need in the future.

AI fluency is an increasingly important skill for graduate employability. We provide our students with equitable access to advanced AI tools, so they can graduate with the ability to engage effectively, critically and confidently with AI as it reshapes the future of work and are equipped to become leaders who understand its ethical, social and environmental impacts

Our researchers are addressing some of AI's most complex challenges, and shaping how this technology will evolve in the decades ahead.

We are advancing machine learning to support the development of more reliable and trusted intelligent technologies, helping us solve complex problems faster.

We are shaping the governance and policy frameworks that guide the responsible adoption of AI across society, and exploring how to adopt AI in ways that strengthen accountability, transparency and public trust.

Our Sydney Nano Hub researchers are leading breakthroughs that could dramatically cut the energy required to power AI computing, offering a pathway towards more sustainable AI infrastructure. 

As a research-intensive university, we are uniquely positioned to play a leadership role in navigating the challenges presented by AI. We've established the AI Sustainability Research and Innovation Fund, which will bring together research expertise from across the University to better understand, measure and reduce the environmental impacts of AI, and explore opportunities for sustainable innovation.

Our AI-enabled research is supported by advanced computing infrastructure, including our new Apollo GPU cluster, national supercomputing facilities, and specialist assistance through the Sydney Informatics Hub.

We work with our industry partners to advance responsible AI adoption in workplaces across Australia.

Through Sydney Executive Plus and collaborative research, we're helping organisations build AI capability, develop human-centred approaches to implementation, and understand the opportunities and challenges AI presents for society and the workplace.

Ensuring responsible and ethical use of AI

Our Responsible AI Framework is our institutional approach to AI use and adoption. It supports agile and responsible adoption of AI at the University, allowing us to respond to new opportunities and risks as they emerge, while maintaining strong safeguards and human oversight.

The Framework defines the principles that guide all AI decision-making at the University. Consistent with emerging best-practice guidelines, the Framework aligns with the Government’s AI Ethics Principlesregulatory bodies, and our University values of trust, accountability and excellence.
