Architecture history, theory and criticism

We examine theories, models and parameters for creating architecture and the physical and social outcomes they produce.

Architectural design

The Innovation in Applied Design Lab is a new, cross-disciplinary research laboratory that facilitates a wide range of research and development projects and issues in the design, study and construction of the built environment.

Architectural and building science and technology

With a global trend towards high-density cities, the impact of buildings and urban precincts on both external and internal environments is critical. Working with air quality, thermal comfort, acoustics and lighting, our IEQ (indoor environment quality) research focuses on driving design innovation, optimising energy efficiency and maximising human wellbeing, performance and comfort.

Our research partners include leading commercial property groups such as Investa, AMP Capital, Arup, Brookfield Multiplex, GPT Group, Stockland, as well as government agencies including NABERS (National Australian Built Environment Rating System) and the NSW Department of Education and Communities.

Design

Our research in digital technology focuses on three core areas:

• human‑centred design
• the design of innovative solutions
• the use of digital products.

Collaborations with industry and the community extend our research into a diverse range of applications, including urban planning, creative industries, transport and healthcare.

Urban and regional planning and policy

Within this discipline, our areas of focus include:

• planning for housing accessibility, diversity and affordability
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing
• international studies (with a focus on Southeast Asia and the Pacific region)
• planning and health
• regional policy.

Much of our multidisciplinary research in this field involves engagement with government agencies and external partners at events including the highly regarded annual Festival of Urbanism (held in partnership with the Henry Halloran Trust), which attracts international scholars and leading thinkers from across the country. The trust advocates innovative research and practice to improve urban planning.
