The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Chris Hilliard as Head of the School of Humanities.
Professor Hilliard is the Challis Professor of History at the University and a historian of modern Britain. He is the author of five books with his sixth book, on the origins of multiculturalism in Britain, under contract to Princeton University Press. He is also co-editor of the journal Modern British History (Oxford University Press).
Professor Hilliard began his career on the border between history and literary studies and more recently has worked in legal history and social and political history. A continual thread running through his research has been a curiosity about the way abstract concepts get translated into practices and routines, especially by ordinary people.
"The School of Humanities has long been known for outstanding research and for innovative and dedicated teaching. It’s an honour, and a big responsibility, to lead this school," said Professor Hilliard.
"Through their teaching and research on fundamental concepts, on contemporary culture, and the human and more-than-human past, colleagues in the school play a key role in the intellectual life of the University and the wider community. I’m excited to continue supporting our academics and students in this work."
Following his recent service as Interim Head of School since late 2023, Professor Hilliard will seamlessly commence his substantive appointment from 11 November.
