This is an amazing program, providing the opportunity to share and exchange knowledge and experiences between both mentor and mentee. It is personally enriching and insightful on the future needs for society and industry with the context of current academic studies. I am happy to be a part of this excellent program.

Mentoring is an incredibly rewarding relationship for all involved. I have really enjoyed being a part of the Business School's well crafted and engaging program. It has been a fantastic way to stay involved with the University and help support students as they explore where they'd like to take their studies.

What's involved?

The Business School’s mentoring program connects students with industry leaders, alumni, and professionals to support their professional and personal development. Students are matched with mentors who can provide tailored advice, industry insights, and career guidance.

Streams include:

Industry Mentoring: Pairs students with business leaders to explore career pathways, gain professional advice, and strengthen industry networks.

Leadership Mentoring: Designed for women-identifying students aspiring to leadership roles in business. This stream provides opportunities to learn from senior leaders, develop confidence, and strengthen leadership capability.

Women in Finance Mentoring: Supports women-identifying students interested in finance careers by connecting them with professionals currently working in the sector. This stream builds confidence, networks, and career readiness.

Mentoring meetings are held primarily in Sydney to enable in-person connection. However, virtual meetings can be arranged if mentors and students cannot meet face-to-face.

The program runs from May to October. Students are expected to commit to one meeting per month with their mentor (approximately 30–45 minutes).

Key program activities include:

  • Mentor briefing session, May
  • Official program launch, May
  • Mid-program check-in, August
  • End-of-program celebration, October
  • Six or more meetings (online or in person)

Mentoring is a partnership where students take an active role in driving the relationship. Mentors provide guidance and share professional experience, while students are encouraged to set goals, prepare for meetings, and reflect on their learning.

Mentors may provide support in:

  • Building professional connections and networks
  • Sharing career pathways and industry insights
  • Supporting students’ confidence and career readiness
  • Guiding exploration of specific industries or professions

This is a mentoring program only. Students should not expect job placements or internships as part of their participation.

Being a mentor with the Business School is a great experience. I joined the program because it was an opportunity to share some of my own experiences since leaving USYD, and in a small way help current students prepare for what comes next. It’s been fantastic connecting with students and seeing how they think about the world.

The mentoring program is a wonderful opportunity for students to have a glimpse of the real world, explore actual work contexts, and receive practical guidance from professionals in their areas of interest. I find it's a great way to collaborate with fellow alumni, gain fresh insights from current students, and give back to the Business School.
