Master of Management alumna Serene Tan shares her tips on choosing a study program that is right for you.

As an undergraduate student, I didn't know what I wanted to do in the future, but one thing I did know is that I wanted to make a positive impact on people’s lives.

My younger brother is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and has high support needs. Growing up in the Australian disability community has enhanced my desire to make a positive impact by creating a more inclusive environment.

Choosing what I wanted to study was a difficult process. There are so many things to consider when selecting a postgraduate degree, such as:

  • who do you want to work with?
  • where do you want to study?
  • what do you hope to gain from your studies?

At times, the process can be stressful and overwhelming.

Why the Master of Management Program?

In 2020, I attended a Master of Management webinar which educated me about the logistics of the course, but more importantly, it taught me about the values of the program.

While applying to this course, I learned that choosing a program is a two-way street. Not only do you have to meet the selection criteria of the program, but the program should also reflect your beliefs and motivate you to become your ideal future self.

I have always encouraged continuous self-development. I believe that improving yourself can have a positive impact on those around you. When researching more about the Master of Management program at the University of Sydney, I learned that the key objectives of this program aligned with my desire to improve myself personally and professionally.

Before learning about this course, choosing a program that matches your individual values and beliefs is something I had never considered. However, this would now be one of the most important aspects I would suggest others to think about when selecting a degree.

Seeing the bigger picture

I have recently started my first full-time semester in the Master of Management program.  I have learnt so much practical information in such a short time period and have had the opportunity to challenge myself both professionally and personally.

As a university student, it can be easy to get caught up in assignments and grades, which makes it difficult to expand your learning past the classroom. However, this program has given me the knowledge and skillset to apply my learning to a real-life setting. It has taught me how vital it is to think of the content past the in-class discussion and assignments and instead focus on the bigger picture. Whilst completing this program, a constant question I find myself asking is: how can this content help me pursue my ideal career path?

For me, this course is not just about achieving good grades. It has always been about using my knowledge to better myself personally and professionally.

The Master of Management is about setting yourself up for success in a real-life environment and pursuing your individual goals.
