Message from the Head of School

Professor Martin Bugeja

Welcome to the School of Accounting, Governance and Regulation.

Our mission is to advance knowledge and develop leaders who strengthen the integrity, transparency and accountability of the institutions, markets, and regulatory systems on which society depends. Through rigorous research and innovative teaching, informed by engagement with industry, regulators, and the professions, we address complex issues in accounting, governance, regulation, sustainability, and institutional trust.

We recognise that organisations, professions, and regulatory environments are increasingly being shaped by technological change, including artificial intelligence, and we incorporate these developments into our research and teaching. Our research informs policy and practice, while our teaching prepares graduates to lead with integrity, insight and impact.

Research with us

Our research strengths span sustainability, qualitative and field‑based inquiry, interdisciplinary work across law, political economy, science and environmental studies. 

We undertake research into complex issues affecting the business community, legal practitioners and regulatory authorities.  Our research engagement means we have links with top tier accounting and law firms, standard setting bodies. We also engage with professional and other advisory bodies.

Accounting and governance

We undertake research into diverse issues affecting the business community and regulatory authorities. Our research expertise includes:

  • the role of accounting information in decision making generally and capital markets in particular
  • the modelling of corporate failure and credit risk 
  • corporate takeovers and reconstructions
  • corporate governance
  • accounting standard setting, particularly the role of international financial reporting standards in Australia
  • market price accounting
  • environmental and social reporting
  • accounting history and critical accounting research
  • public sector accountability and financial reporting
  • sustainable reporting requirements

Business law and regulation

Our academics produce influential research that is cited by the courts, used extensively by practitioners, governments and tertiary institutions, and has an impact on parliamentary enquiries and law reform bodies. Our research expertise includes:

  • banking and finance law, financial secrecy and fraud  
  • competition law and anti-trust crimes
  • corporations law, directors’ duties, and corporate crime 
  • financial services, securities markets, insider trading and market offences 
  • consumers, marketing, fair trading, intellectual property and franchising 
  • money laundering, terrorist financing, cybercrime and foreign corruption 
  • regulation of international financial crime, fintech and cryptocurrencies

Well-known journals edited by our staff

These journals make a distinctive contribution to accounting theory and practice in the international arena.
