5 reasons to study project management at Sydney

Manage complex projects across a wide range of industries

Our Bachelor of Project Management is a unique degree that works with your interests and equips you to deliver projects and drive organisational change.

1. Take your career in any direction

Project management is a truly versatile field. From delivering new products, services and infrastructure to launching major events, project managers are the go-to people to get the job done in any industry.

Our Bachelor of Project Management includes core subjects spanning project finance, complex project coordination, analytics, risk management, and psychology, so you’ll graduate with transferable skills that appeal to a wide range of industries.

You’ll also choose either a Project Management major or one from the shared pool of majors, meaning you can tailor your degree to your interests.

2. A growing field

Project management graduates are highly sought after in industries including engineering and construction, mining, IT, health, and energy.

As many of these industries are undergoing transformations in the face of changing technology and COVID-19 related disruptions, project managers are needed to implement these changes and ensure the success of large-scale projects.

The Australian Federal Government has also committed to delivering a significant number of major projects to restart the economy in the wake of COVID-19, which will see project managers become more in demand than ever.

The 2020 KPMG Australia and Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) Survey found that 67% of Australian businesses believe that projects are becoming more complex, but 53% do not believe their organisations are investing in the skills needed to manage this complexity effectively. Project managers bridge this gap between project needs and delivery.

3. Learn from global industry experts

When you study project management at the University of Sydney, you’ll learn from experts in the field who have conducted world-class research and taught Australia-wide and overseas.

You’ll learn practice-based theories and methods from lecturers who understand the dynamics of how projects are scoped, delivered, and managed.

The School of Project Management also leverages the strengths of our John Grill Institute for Project Leadership, a recognised leader in project knowledge and performance.

4. Gain industry and research experience while you study

The School of Project Management collaborates with a wide range of industry and government partners on research focusing on the complexities of project conception, project governance, project ecologies and project leadership.

You’ll have the opportunity to undertake industry placements throughout the course of your degree and complete a team-based final-year project. By initiating, planning, executing, controlling and closing an industry-style project, you’ll build confidence in managing a project from start to finish.

Interested in project management research? The Vacation Research Internship Program gives you the opportunity to work on a real research project in project management alongside respected and accomplished key researchers as an undergraduate or postgraduate student.

5. Add a year of study to combine your degree

The University of Sydney is the only Australian university to offer a combined Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Project Management degree. The combined degree is five years in length, meaning you’ll need to complete just one extra year of study to attain two full qualifications.

By completing the combined degree you’ll develop technical expertise in your chosen engineering stream while you gain complementary project management skills. You’ll also graduate with a broader skillset.

This sets you up for future career changes, and may give you the competitive edge as employers seek multiskilled candidates.
