These resolutions must be read in conjunction with applicable University By-laws, Rules and policies including (but not limited to) the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2014 (the 'Coursework Rule'), the Coursework Policy 2014, the Resolutions of the Faculty, the University of Sydney (Student Appeals against Academic Decisions) Rule 2006 (as amended) and the Academic Board policies on Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism. 2 Attendance pattern

The attendance pattern for this course is full time or part time according to candidate choice. Visa requirements commonly restrict international students to full time study only.

3 Admission to candidature

(1)
Admission to this course is on the basis of a secondary school leaving qualification such as the NSW Higher School Certificate (including national and international equivalents), tertiary study or an approved preparation program. English language requirements must be met where these are not demonstrated by sufficient qualifications taught in English. Special admission pathways are open for mature aged applicants who do not possess a school leaving qualification, educationally disadvantaged applicants and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Applicants are ranked by merit and offers for available places are issued according to the ranking. Details of admission policies are found in the Coursework Rule.
(2)
In addition, admission to this course requires the applicants to present a portfolio of their artwork and/or attend an interview. The results of this process will form part of the ranking for applicants.

4 Requirements for award

(1)
The units of study that may be taken for the course are set out in:
(a)
Table A: Undergraduate core units of study; and
(b)
Table B: Undergraduate elective units of study.
(2)
To qualify for the award of the pass degree, a candidate must successfully complete 144 credit points, comprising:
(a)
96 credit points from the core units of study as set out in Table A, which must include a disciplinary major; and
(b)
48 credit points from the elective units of study as set out in Table B, ensuring that 24 credit points of the elective units must be from units of study listed in the Critical Studies section.

5 Majors

(1)
A major constitutes 48 credit points chosen from units of study listed in Table A for that major, except the Critical Studies major.
(2)
A requirement of the course is that candidates must complete one of the majors listed below from (a) to (f). The Critical Studies major (g) is only available as a second major. The majors available are:
(a)
Jewellery and Object
(b)
Screen Arts
(c)
Painting
(d)
Photomedia
(e)
Printmedia
(f)
Sculpture
(g)
Critical Studies

The Critical Studies major requires completion of 48 credit points from elective units of study as set out in Table B listed in the Critical Studies section.
(4)
Candidates wishing to transfer between disciplinary majors should contact the Faculty.

6 Requirements for the Honours degree

(1)
Honours , involving a research project, is available to meritorious candidates, who complete an additional year of full time study after the completion of the pass degree. Honours can be undertaken by studio practice and research paper or by dissertation.
(2)
To qualify for admission to the honours year an applicant should:
have completed the requirements of the pass degree of the Bachelor of Visual Arts, or equivalent degree from a recognised institution, with a weighted average mark (using the WAM formula below) across intermediate and senior units of at least 65.
(3)
Candidature in the Honours year cannot be deferred.
(4)
The units of study that may be taken for the course are set out in the Honours units of study table.
(5)
To qualify for the award of the honours degree a candidate must complete 48 credit points comprising:
(a)
By studio practice and research paper:
(i)
42 credit points of Honours Studio; and
(ii)
6 credit points of an Honours unit of study prescribed by the Faculty as listed in the Table of units of study in the Faculty Handbook.
(b)
By dissertation:
(i)
42 credit points of Honours Dissertation; and
(ii)
6 credit points of an Honours unit of study prescribed by the Faculty as listed in the Table of units of study in the Faculty Handbook.
(6)
The honours mark is determined by calculating a WAM from the 48 credit points of honours units of study, using the formula:

The mark is the actual mark obtained by the student for the unit of study, or in the case of a failing grade with no mark - 0. Pass/fail assessed subjects and credit transfer subjects (from another institution) are excluded from these calculations. However, the marks from all attempts at a unit of study are included.

The Honours degree of Bachelor of Visual Arts is awarded in the following classes:

7 University Medal

A student with an honours mark of 90 or above may be awarded a university medal. The medal is awarded at the discretion of the Faculty to the highest achieving students who in the opinion of the Faculty have an outstanding academic record, in accordance with the Coursework Policy 2014.

8 Award of the degree

(1)
The Bachelor of Visual Arts is awarded as either Pass or Honours. The honours degree is awarded in classes ranging from First Class to Third Class according to the rules specified above.
(2)
Candidates for the award of the Honours degree who do not meet the requirements, and who have not already graduated, will be awarded the pass degree.
(3)
Candidates who have proceeded to honours directly from the pass degree will not graduate until completion of the honours year.

9 Transitional provisions

(1)
These resolutions apply to students who commenced their candidature after 1 January, 2017 and students who commenced their candidature prior to 1 January, 2017 who elect to proceed under these resolutions.
(2)
Candidates who commenced prior to 1 January, 2017 may, with the Faculty's permission, complete the requirements in accordance with the resolutions in force at the time of their commencement, provided that the requirements are completed by 1 January, 2022. The Faculty may specify a later date for completion or specify alternative requirements for completion of candidatures that extend beyond this time.
