Wildlife Conservation

Overview

This page was first published on 8 December 2025.

Study in Wildlife Conservation is offered by the School of Life and Environmental Sciences. Units of study in this minor are mostly available at standard and advanced level.

About the minor

The Wildlife Conservation minor equips students with the knowledge and skills to address global biodiversity challenges through an evidence-based approach. It combines three key disciplinary areas: foundational biology, advanced ecology, and applied conservation. Students begin by exploring life from genes to ecosystems, with evolution as the unifying theme. They gain essential skills in experimental design, statistical analysis, and interpretation of biological research. Building on this foundation, students develop an in-depth understanding of the dynamics of ecological systems, species interactions, and the processes shaping major ecosystems in intermediate and senior units of study. Emphasis is placed on quantitative methods, experimental design, and the role of ecological science in conservation and wildlife management. Finally, students apply their foundational knowledge to real-world conservation challenges, introducing techniques such as population genetics, eDNA analysis, and stakeholder engagement. Students learn how to apply the scientific method to develop effective conservation strategies.

Experiential learning is central to the minor, with inquiry-led practical classes, ecological sampling, short-term projects, and the use of real-world data to tackle pressing conservation issues. Graduates will develop strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills, enabling them to contribute to evidence-based wildlife management plans and play an active role in global conservation solutions.
