Katie Flanagan was recently appointed as an Adjunct Professor at The University of Sydney and is a member of the Sydney Infectious Diseases Institute (Sydney ID). She brings almost 30 years of experience in vaccine research in Europe, Africa and Australia.
She is a Senior Staff Specialist in Infectious Diseases at Westmead Hospital and Co-Chair of the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation where she leads vaccine policy development for Australia. Katie is past President of the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases and founded the ASID Vaccination Special Interest Group. She has strong local and global research networks including professorial appointments at RMIT and UTAS and is an honorary fellow at MCRI in Melbourne. She has published multiple peer reviewed papers* including articles in Nature Comms, Nat Rev Immunol, Nat Immunol, Science, Immunity, NEJM, Lancet and PNAS. She is Chief Editor for a new Frontiers in Immunology section on sex differences in immunology. She has secured a career total of >$64 million in research funding and has had continuous NHMRC funding since she started working in Australia 15 years ago.
Her main research interests are in human clinical trials, immunomodulatory effects of vaccines and sex differences in immunity. She is keen to develop new research opportunities in Sydney, and we warmly welcome her to our Sydney ID community.
