Sydney Law School is delighted to welcome Professor Fleur Johns as its new Dean and Head of School. Professor Johns brings extensive experience, a distinguished body of scholarship, and a forward-thinking vision that will shape the school’s future.
Professor Johns returns to Sydney Law School with a remarkable academic and professional background. She is a leading scholar in international law, with contributions in international legal theory, law and technology, and law and development.
Before rejoining Sydney Law School in 2025, Professor Johns was a Professor at UNSW, where she held an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship.
Her career includes visiting appointments in Europe, the UK, the US, and Canada, along with editorial roles for prominent journals like the American Journal of International Law.
In addition, she has a background in legal practice, as a project finance lawyer in the United States, where she regularly performed pro bono legal work as well.
In 2020, she was elected a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia and served on its Executive Board as International Secretary from 2022 to 2024.
Enthusiasm for leadership
Reflecting on her new role, Professor Johns expressed enthusiasm for leading Sydney Law School into an exciting new chapter.
“I was drawn to the prospect of leading Sydney Law School by a combination of affection for this community, respect for its many achievements, and a sense of excitement about prospects for its further strengthening and emboldening,” she said.
Her vision aligns with the University’s Sydney in 2032 strategy, focusing on fostering collaboration, expanding equity initiatives, and setting ambitious goals for the future.
“I see opportunities for Sydney Law School to play a significant role in the realisation of the University’s Sydney in 2032 strategy through further nurturing of a culture of collaboration and connectedness within the school,” she noted.
“This includes expanding commitments to equity of access and opportunity for both students and staff and pursuing ambitious collective goals.”
I plan to lead by inviting Law School staff, students, and alumni to enhance collaboration, inclusivity, and a shared sense of purpose with one another and the University at large.

Professor Johns plans to lead with values of transparency, collegiality, and respect for difference.
She aims to foster a community that values all members and equips students and staff to make important contributions across many fields in service of the common good.
“My vision for Sydney Law School is for it to thrive as a diverse community of scholars, educators, and students committed to doing outstanding and meaningful work,” she said.
“I plan to lead by inviting Law School staff, students, and alumni to enhance collaboration, inclusivity, and a shared sense of purpose with one another and the University at large.”
The appointment of Professor Johns marks a new era of growth and innovation for Sydney Law School.
Her dedication to fostering connections within and beyond the University will contribute to the school’s ongoing success as a leader in legal education and research.
