Clinical trial evidence from the Sydney Clinical Trials Centre (CTC) has improved outcomes across the human lifespan - from maternal and newborn health to cancer, cardiovascular, infectious diseases and chronic diseases - shaping clinical practice, informing policy, and enabling better care globally.

We partner with global industry leaders, government agencies, health systems, research collaborators and consumers to generate reliable evidence with real-world impact.

As a flagship centre of research excellence at the University of Sydney, CTC is a recognised leader in trial design, delivery, analysis, and translation. Our multidisciplinary teams combine deep methodological expertise with proven operational capability to deliver complex, multi-centre trials at scale. Working closely with partners, we design studies that are feasible, fundable, and aligned to evolving clinical, consumer, and partner priorities.

Our strength lies in delivering trials that are not only scientifically rigorous, but also actionable, producing evidence that can be implemented, scaled, and adopted. Through this approach, we accelerate innovation, improve patient outcomes, and drive meaningful change in health systems.

Guided by a commitment to equity, consumer involvement, and scientific excellence, we ensure our research reflects the populations it serves and contributes to better patient care and stronger, more sustainable health systems.

Our vision

Our vision is to improve global health outcomes through excellence in clinical trials and related research.

Our strategy focuses on three priorities: advancing innovative trial design and methodology; delivering high-quality trials efficiently across diverse clinical and geographic settings; and building sustainable research capability through our people, and partnerships - enabling accelerated innovation and translation of evidence into real-world impact.

Our history

Established in 1988 as Australia’s first national clinical trials centre, under the name NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre, the CTC was created to provide national leadership in the design, coordination and analysis of large, multi‑centre clinical trials, addressing a growing need for rigorous, collaborative research to inform clinical practice across disciplines.

From the outset, the CTC played a pioneering role in advancing trial methodology and building national capability for collaborative, large scale research. For decades, clinical trials led by the CTC have informed clinical guidelines, shaped policy decisions, and improved health outcomes, globally.

As clinical trials have evolved in scale and complexity, so too has the CTC. Today, we operate as a globally connected trials centre, working with industry, government, and academic partners to deliver fit-for-purpose research across diverse therapeutic areas.

Diversity and inclusion

The CTC is committed to diversity, inclusion, and meaningful consumer involvement as core components of rigorous clinical trials.

Consumers play a critical role in shaping our research. We actively partner with patients, carers, and community representatives to shape trial design, delivery and interpretation, ensuring studies address real-world needs, and deliver outcomes that matter to those directly affected by health conditions.

By designing studies that are accessible, representative, and reflective of diverse populations, we strengthen the quality, applicability, and impact of our research, supporting better decisions in clinical practice and health systems.
