Whether your goal is to deepen your clinical practice or pursue research and leadership opportunities, our postgraduate courses in medical imaging science prepare you with the specialist skills to thrive at the forefront of modern medical imaging.

Study a postgraduate coursework degree in medical imaging science

You can explore the fascinating world of medical imaging through three postgraduate coursework degrees designed to match your goals and level of study:

Each program offers opportunities to develop leadership, knowledge, and skills to implement new and optimised imaging techniques to improve patient and healthcare outcomes.

In addition, the University of Sydney has been recognised as 23rd globally for life sciences and medicine (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026) giving you the confidence to know your education is grounded in world-leading expertise.

Pathways into medical imaging study

To be eligible for entry into one of our postgraduate coursework degrees in medical imaging, you’ll need to hold a bachelor’s degree from the University of Sydney or an equivalent institution in a relevant discipline.

Applicants typically hold either a master’s degree or a bachelor’s degree (with a credit average or honours) in Diagnostic Radiography, Radiation Therapy, or Nuclear Medicine.

If you’re currently a clinically practicing diagnostic radiographer, you may be eligible for a reduced volume of learning as recognition of your expertise.

This allows experienced practitioners to progress through the program in a more streamlined way, building on existing clinical capability.

For domestic applicants, the Indigenous Facilitated Entry Scheme and the Rural Applicants Facilitated Entry Scheme are available for eligible applicants.

Have a look at the SHS Medical Imaging Science Special Admission Pathways Guide in the entry requirements tab on the Master of Medical Imaging Science course page for definitions and information on facilitated entry schemes.

Flexible learning from global experts

All of our medical imaging courses are offered 100% part-time online through our interactive online learning environment, giving you the flexibility to tailor your study schedule around your lifestyle, from anywhere in the world.

At the same time, you’ll be part of a diverse student body, enriching your learning through collaboration with other future health professionals.

You’ll learn from accomplished academic clinicians and researchers who are internationally recognised for their expertise and leadership in medical imaging.

Your teachers work on challenges spanning advanced MRI and CT techniques, artificial intelligence for image analysis, cancer detection and treatment monitoring, and neurological and cardiovascular imaging.

They’re at the forefront of driving safer, more precise and more personalised approaches to care.

Learn with advanced imaging technology

You’ll train using state-of-the-art imaging technology rarely available within a university setting.

Recent investments include the Philips Spectral CT 7500 with an Advanced Visualisation Workspace and the Hyperfine Swoop MRI system, these are technologies that are reshaping diagnostic precision and accessibility in contemporary practice.

In addition, we are equipped with dedicated ultrasound scanners and X-ray facilities, supporting a comprehensive and clinically grounded learning environment.

Lead through world-class research

If you’re passionate about undertaking research to shape the future of medical imaging science, you can take your studies further with a Master of Philosophy (Medicine and Health) or Doctor of Philosophy (Medicine and Health).

These advanced research degrees open doors to hands-on discovery, cutting-edge projects, and opportunities to influence policy and practice on a global scale.

Studying with a postgraduate research degree with us means more than gaining knowledge, it’s your chance to join a world-leading research culture, collaborate with experts, and contribute to breakthroughs that change lives.

Build your career

Graduates of our programs go on to lead and advance imaging practice across hospital and clinical settings, specialising in modalities such as MRI, CT, breast and hybrid imaging.

Many step into senior clinical, educational and management roles, implementing new and optimised imaging techniques, mentoring future practitioners, and upholding the highest standards of patient care.

A smaller number pursue careers in research, academia or the medical technology industry, contributing to the development of new imaging technologies and clinical applications.

Across all pathways, our graduates play a vital role in improving diagnosis, treatment planning and patient outcomes, shaping the future of healthcare through excellence in medical imaging.
