Hands weaving string

Autumn School Holiday Program: Pacific Life, Art and Stories

A school holiday children's workshop at the Chau Chak Wing Museum
Join us on Tuesday 23 April during the Autumn School Holidays for workshops that take you on a journey to Papua New Guinea.

The Chau Chak Wing Museum offers a unique program for primary school aged children to discover our close neighbours in an interactive program.

These school holidays bring your children for a journey to Papua New Guinea through story, language, craft and art. Learn how to weave and help make a bilum bag with some traditional patterns from Papua New Guinea. The workshops are led by Joyce Arosame Robertson, from Goroka, and Grace Hull, from Milne Bay Province.

In each workshop, you will:

  • learn to count in the national language of Tok Pisin
  • hear stories and songs from the villages
  • make a bilum bag and take part in a string-making activity with a "bilummena"
  • learn to weave

Joyce and Grace will share stories and lead short tours of the exhibitions Omie and Tidal Kin.

These activities are perfect for children aged 6-12. Parents/guardians are required to stay with children throughout the session.
