Hear stories through tāonga (artefacts) centred around the 1820 journey to England by three of New Zealand’s most influential characters from the early 19th century.

Hear stories centred around the 1820 journey to England by Hongi Hika, Waikato, and CMS Missionary Thomas Kendall, three of New Zealand’s most influential characters from the early 19th century. The event will include elements of a traditional Māori powhiri (welcoming), a screening of the new short film Hongi’s Hikoi, and an talk and tāonga (cultural artefacts) presentation by Brent Kerehona.

About the speaker

Brent Kerehona Pukepuke-Ahitapu is an author, history teacher, military and Māori historian. He traces his whakapapa (genealogy) to Ngāpuhi, Te Whakatōhea, Tūhoe, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui. His current research and education initiatives centre on the life of his famous ancestor, Hongi Hika.
