Greek culture and heritage weekend

Explore the traditional costumes and dances of regional Greece
On Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 May, 12 noon–4pm, explore traditional costumes and regional Greek dance with the Hellenic Lyceum Sydney at the Museum

Identity is more than just where you are from – it is the traditions, dress, dance, song, and food, that are passed down from generation to generation.

The Chau Chak Wing Museum is proud to partner with Hellenic Lyceum Sydney to host a free celebration of Greek culture and heritage.

Inspired by the current exhibition Impressions of Greece and the Woodhouse historic photograph collection, the weekend will feature a pop-up exhibition of traditional costumes from the various regions of Greece.

Join us for a series of floor talks to hear stories about how costumes have passed through generations within families, before being acquired by the Hellenic Lyceum. Learn how the Greek national costumes were created by the first King and Queen of Greece, Othon and Amalia, circa 1837.

On the forecourt, the Lyceum Club dance troupe will stage regional dances and our Museum terrace will be turned into a Greek taverna with live music and tavli boards, to while away the hours over a coffee from Sounds Café

This event is part of the 2023 Greek Festival of Sydney program is presented with the support of The Nicholas Anthony Aroney Greek Cultural Program and in partnership with the Hellenic Lyceum Sydney.
