The University of Sydney has announced that Professor John Prins has been appointed the new Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health, commencing his new role on 1 September 2025. 

Professor Prins is a respected endocrinologist and an accomplished senior leader with extensive experience in health, medical research, and higher education. 

He has held senior roles across clinical, academic and commercial organisations, including as Head of Melbourne Medical School, Director and CEO of the Mater Research Institute, and most recently as CEO of Health Translation Queensland and Chair of the Australian Health Research Alliance.

An active clinician-scientist, he is also a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.

Professor John Prins commences as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health on 1 September 2025.

In accepting the role, Professor Prins said: “I’m delighted to join the University of Sydney as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health. It’s a great privilege to lead a faculty with a strong legacy of innovation and impact, and I’m particularly excited to join at a time when transformative initiatives like the Sydney Biomedical Accelerator are coming to life.”

Professor Annamarie Jagose, Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost said: “John's experience demonstrates strength in leading complex organisations and delivering excellence in education and research.

“He is a passionate advocate for strong collaboration between universities, health services, government and industry, and is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of educators, researchers and health professionals. We’re excited to have John join the University, particularly as work on the Sydney Biomedical Accelerator gains momentum.”

Professor Jagose also thanked Professor Nancy Baxter for her leadership as Interim Executive Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Health: "Nancy’s commitment to enriching the student experience and supporting our academic community has been greatly valued, and I look forward to her continued contribution in her ongoing role as Deputy Executive Dean (Research Centres),” she said.
